Appeasement and Beginning of WWII SIN #37 Warm-up 1. How did the Treaty of Versailles lead to WWII? 2. Why could we argue that Japan is responsible for starting WWII, not Germany? 3. Do you know anyone that served in the military during WWII? If so who? SWBAT: Examine the effect appeasement had on Hitler's invasion of Europe.

Japan invasion of China Sept 1931 Japan seized Manchuria, a province of China, to gain natural resources. First direct challenge to the League of Nations and they did…

Japan continued to create a New Order in East Asia and took over eastern China in 1937

While invading China in the Second Sino-Japanese War, Japanese soldiers were frustrated about fighting in a war with no clear goal. Dec 13, 1937: Rape of Nanking- after surrender of the city, Japanese soldiers looted, murdered, raped, Chinese civilians. 300,000 Chinese died during this 6 week period.

New Alliances Nov 1936 Mussolini and Hitler created the Axis Powers uniting Germany, Italy, and Japan

Appeasement Hitler creates air force and military draft- league does nothing 1936 Hitler ordered German army to reoccupy the Rhineland (buffer zone between Germany and France). Again the League did nothing to stop him Policy of appeasement by Allies- give in to unsatisfied countries reasonable demands in order to keep peace and stability in Europe, unwilling to risk going to war.

Hitler later admitted that he would have backed down if the French & British had challenged him. By taking the Rhineland: 1) strengthened Hitler’s power & prestige within Germany. 2) balance of power changed in Germany’s favor. 3) the weak response by France & Britain encouraged Hitler to speed up his military & territorial expansion. 4) brought the world closer to WWII. Don’t write, just read

The League issued only a mild condemnation. Banners throughout Germany announced, “Today Germany! Tomorrow the World!” “ It is us today, it will be you tomorrow” – Haile Selassie states during his address to the League of Nations. What is the quote warning the people of Europe?

Hitler begins to take Europe Goal was to unite the German people (Anschluss) that was forbidden in the treaty March 13, 1938 Hitler seized Austria by threatening invasion Next objective was to conquer the Sudetenland (part of Czechoslovakia with large German population)

What would you have done? Were there other options?

Munich Conference Leaders of 4 European powers (Britain, France, Germany, Italy) met to find a peaceful solution. To avoid confrontation, Britain and France gave in to ALL of Hitler’s demands and handed over the Sudetenland in return for 2 promises: 1. Sudetenland was Hitler’s last territorial demand 2. Hitler must leave the rest of Czechoslovakia alone

Highest point of appeasement Chamberlain boasted the agreement was symbol of “peace in our time” …And many believed him

Where is the USA? Staying neutral and avoiding involvement in a war at all costs Neutrality Acts: forbidding sale of guns and loaning money to any nation at war, traveling on ships from countries at war. USA

#37 cont.- Homework 1.How did Hitler break the Treaty of Versailles? List 3 ways. 2.Describe the effectiveness of the Allied appeasement strategy. Was it successful? Why or why not? Provide evidence to support your answer 3.What would have happened if the USA had been involved earlier? Would things have turned out differently?
