Japan (run by the military and Emperor Hirohito): Take over China to gain iron, coal and other natural resources. b. Italy (run by Mussolini): Take over Ethiopia in Africa to build a “Fascist empire.” Ethiopian leader Haile Selassie asks the League of Nations for help, but they are powerless. c. Germany (run by Hitler): Take over Rhineland, Austria, Czechoslovakia, and eventually Poland.

11. II. Hitler’s Allies 3. Hitler also gets support from Spain. They have a fascist dictator named Francisco Franco. Hitler gave Franco troops and tanks during the Spanish Civil War, when Franco and his Nationalist forces overthrew Spain’s democratic government. So Franco owed Hitler big time!
