Homework Test on the Inter-War Years Wednesday. Study! Review sheet can be completed for extra credit on Wednesday.

Aim #6: How did Hitler plan to establish a Third Reich (German Empire)? Do Now: Why did Hitler believe that Germany had the right to conquer more land in Europe and build an empire?

I. Hitler plans to Expand Germany A.Hitler decides he wants to build a Third Reich (German Empire to last 1,000 years). B. Step #1: In 1935 Hitler takes back the Rhineland, violating the Treaty of Versailles.

I. Hitler plans to Expand Germany 1. Britain and France do nothing! They do not want another war, will do anything to avoid it! This is called appeasement (giving in to an aggressive country to keep peace). 2. The United States does not want to get involved. This is called isolationism (avoiding political ties to any other country)

I. Hitler plans to Expand Germany C. Step # 2: In March 1938, Hitler takes over Austria peacefully (Anschluss). Austrians support this, want to be part of Germany.

I. Hitler plans to Expand Germany D. Step #3: Also in 1938 Hitler wants The Sudetenland (western border regions of Czechoslovakia, the only defense the Czechs had against a German invasion).

I. Hitler plans to Expand Germany 1. Munich Conference: Germany, Italy, Great Britain and France meet in Sept 1938 to discuss the Sudetenland crisis. Britain and France agree to let Hitler take over the Sudetenland as long as he promises not to invade Czechoslovakia. British Prime Minister Neville Chamberlain declares that Britain has achieved “Peace in our time.” Do you think he is right?

I. Hitler plans to Expand Germany 2. Six months after the Munich meeting, Hitler takes over Czechoslovakia anyway.

II. Hitler’s Allies A.As Hitler prepares for war, he needs help from other countries 1. In 1936, he forms the Axis Powers: Alliance between Japan, Italy and Germany.

II. Hitler’s Allies 2. All three countries are dictatorships who want to solve their country’s political and economic problems by conquering land. a. Japan (run by the military and Emperor Hirohito): Take over China to gain iron, coal and other natural resources. b. Italy (run by Mussolini): Take over Ethiopia in Africa to build a “Fascist empire.” Ethiopian leader Haile Selassie asks the League of Nations for help, but they are powerless. c. Germany (run by Hitler): Take over Rhineland, Austria, Czechoslovakia, and eventually Poland.

II. Hitler’s Allies 3. Hitler also gets support from Spain. They have a fascist dictator named Francisco Franco. Hitler gave Franco troops and tanks during the Spanish Civil War, when Franco and his Nationalist forces overthrew Spain’s democratic government. So Franco owed Hitler big time!

Concluding Question Do Britain and France deserve just as much blame as Hitler for causing World War II? Is there any point where you think they could have stopped him?
