The Treaty of Versailles, 1919 The End of World War I

Representatives from Great Britain, France, Germany, and the U.S. met to discuss the terms of Germany’s surrender. The monarchy in Germany had lost power, and the Allies agreed to establish a democratic government there.

Three major decisions were signed into action by Germany’s acceptance of the treaty. These were concerning: 1. German Territory: Germany itself would be divided into two parts. The region of Alsace-Lorraine, a major coal – producing area would be given to France. Denmark would gain land to the north of Germany, and Belgium in the west. The Allied powers would place troops along the Rhine river. Germany lost control of the islands and archipelagos in the South Pacific; these were given to Great Britain and Japan. In Africa, France gained Cameroon and Britain was given German East Africa and German West Africa.

Why did the Allies take German territory from them? They wanted to take away German power and lesson the strength of their empire.

2. German Military Was made much smaller; could be no larger than 100,000 men. Could not have an air force.

Why did the Allies reduce the German military? They thought if Germany didn’t have a strong military, then they wouldn’t provoke another war.

3. Money Germany would pay $5 billion to the Allies by May 21, In 1921, another $25 billion was added to their war debt, to be paid by 1963.

Why did the Allies want money from Germany? The Allies blamed Germany for the war and thought they should pay off the war debt and help to rebuild France and the rest of Europe since Germany dragged them into the war.

Results of WWI The Treaty of Versailles forced Germany to accept sole responsibility for starting WWI. It also took away Germany’s colonies and made the country pay huge war debts.

Results of WWI Four Great empires came to an end: the German Empire, the Austro-Hungarian Empire, the Ottoman Empire, and the Russian Empire.

Results of WWI The League of Nations was established to keep peace and to prevent future wars.

Results of WWI The new countries of Austria, Hungary, Yugoslavia, Czechoslovakia, Poland, Finland, Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania emerged from the old empires.

Results of WWI Most nations were financially exhausted. To help pay war debts, nations increased their supply of paper money. This led to inflation, a condition of extremely high prices.

Results of WWI Dissatisfaction over the way boundary lines were drawn led to tensions that carried over into WWII.
