The Austro-Hungarian Empire was divided up into several smaller states. New nations were formed in Eastern Europe. Turkey lost most of its territories in the Middle East
The Treaty of Versailles created the League of Nations, an organization of nations that agreed to defend each other against aggressors. However, many major world powers, such as the United States and Russia, refused to join the League.
