Lab 22.1 Write - up Today you are going to do a lab write-up for a lab on growing crystals. You will be graded as you would for a WASL lab write-up. This lab will be about 20% of your grade for this progress report, so do a good job. CAUTION !!! even though you are deciding what you are going to do as a group. Each step should be written in your own words. Sending it to someone and changing a few words will not get passed me. Your sentence structure must be your own. Your material list will of course contain the same items.

I want you to brainstorm some ideas on what we do to keep things warmer for a longer period of time and slow their cooling. (think of your bodies, houses, coffee) Raise your hands and share your ideas when the teacher calls on you.

Now, I want you to brainstorm some ideas on what we do to cool things off and speed up their cooling. (think of your bodies, rooms, drinks) raise your hands and share your ideas when the teacher calls on you.

Think of the ideas you heard during the brainstorming, not all of them would be reasonable for keeping a “small petri dish” warm longer, or for cooling it off faster. You are going to choose only one variable. You will either * keep one petri dish warmer longer while leaving the other to cool at room temperature. OR * you will cool one dish off faster while leaving the other to cool at room temperature.

Title of your Lab Write-up Question - How Does the rate of Cooling a liquid affect the size of the crystals that form? Manipulated Variable =___________________ Responding Variable = ____________________ You have 10 minutes to: title this lab, copy the question and identify the two variables in this question and write it neatly in your science notebook. Remember you must decide what you are going to change (manipulate) and measure as a lab group.

Prediction-A valid prediction must be related to the 1 point investigative question and include both the manipulated and the responding variable. Predicted Reason -Your prediction reason must refer to both 1 point the manipulated and responding variable. It must be based on specific scientific evidence. (I believe that X will cause Y to do Z, because I know....) You have 10 minutes to put the two variables you identified into prediction form, give a valid scientific reason and write it into your science notebook Hypothe sis

Logical Steps -How are you keeping one container warmer 1 point longer while the other cools faster. You must list all the steps that someone would have to do to repeat your experiment. You must have enough details and measurements included so they will have to doubt about what they have to do. Controlled Variable - State what you will keep the same in the 1 point You must list at least 2. You must also state that they are your “controlled variable”. (They are what you are keeping the same in the experiment.) Procedure: You have 10 minutes to list all the steps you or someone else will need to do to complete your experiment. You must list at least two things that you will keep the same: Control Variables

1 Point Materials - A list of all the materials and amounts needed to perform the procedure You have 5 minutes to identified all the materials you will need to use to do this experiment Materia ls:

You have 5 minutes to identified what data you will be collecting and make a chart or data table (refer back to your responding variable) 1 - Point Data Table or Chart

I will repeat my experiment to verify my results experiment is valid - 1 point I will repeat my experiment ____ times to make sure my You have 1 minute write this statement

* In a coming class you will do your experiment * In the next class you will collect your data * Last, you will write your conclusion
