A researcher must follow scientific method for research to be considered valid. The following slides will discuss the procedure for applying scientific method to experiments
Define the problem What is to be studied?
Research A scientist researches the topic to be studied to find any preexisting knowledge that may help in the experiment
Hypothesis What is a hypothesis?
A hypothesis is always written as a statement Example: Drinking coffee 30 minutes before a test improves test scores. Now write your own example of a hypothesis
Design the experiment Study one variable at a time Include a control group Keep all other factors equal Use large number of trials Repeat
Control group The group that does not receive the experimental variable.
Experimental group The group that does receive the experimental variable
Observe and record data Data table graph
Conclusion The conclusion is based solely on the data collected Never use the word” prove”
Experimental Design Some Terms.
Soap Floats Lab. Question/Problem How your lab group make the bar of soap float in a container of water?
1. Define the problem by OBSERVING.
Scientific Method Observation/Research/Problem Hypothesis
What is science?.
Ask a Question What are we testing? Step 1. Step 2 Research your topic. Look at the past work of others to see if this problem has already been tested.
AKA: Scientific Inquiry
The Scientific Method.
Scientific Method The common steps that biologists and other scientists use to gather information and answer questions.
The Scientific Method: DR HERC
Scientific Method A way to understand CAUSE AND EFFECT in the natural world.
What is your Objective? THE PROBLEM Curiosity???????? ???????? Observation is a key element here!!!
