The Revolutionary War Study guide

Big Ideas When was the revolutionary war? What was the war about? Who were the Patriots? Who were the Loyalists? What were the events that lead to the American Revolution?

What was the American Revolution?

A fight to win freedom from Great Britain and become a sovereign nation. (a sovereign nation is an independent, self-governing nation)

What was the American Revolution about?

Irreconcilable differences Many colonists felt that England treated them unfairly. Colonists made efforts to reconcile differences with the mother country, but could not persuade England to bend.

Who were the Patriots?

The colonists who wanted to be free from British rule.

Who were the loyalists?

The colonists who wanted to remain a part of England.

What were the events that lead to the Revolutionary War?

Events leading to the Revolutionary War… The Sugar Act The Stamp Act Boston Massacre The Coercive Acts (aka The Intolerable Acts) Meeting of the First Continental Congress The Battle at Lexington and Concord

The Sugar and Stamp Acts The British parliament taxed the colonies on sugar, tea, and other imports. The British passed the Stamp Act to pay for British troops on the American frontier. These taxes angered the colonists because the colonists did not have a representative in the English parliament. “Taxation without representation.”

The Boston Massacre English soldiers known as “Red Coats” fired on any angry mob of colonists and killed five people. This event was propaganda for the Patriots. The patriots made it sound like the Red Coats “massacred” a whole bunch of innocent bystanders.  (what is propaganda?)

The Boston Tea Party The “Sons of Liberty” dress as Mohawk Indians and unload the tea of 3 ships into the Boston Harbors. The Boston Tea Party was a protest of English tax laws and happened while the colonists were boycotting English tea.  (what is boycotting?)

The Intolerable Acts Harsh regulations placed on the colony by British Parliament.  Boston Harbors was closed  Colonists were required to board soldiers  British could not be tried for crimes in the colonies  No self-government in Boston

The Continental Congress and the formation of the Continental Army A secret meeting of the colonists The colonists agreed to boycott English goods in order to make England change their policies. They would meet again when England refused.

Battle at Lexington and Concord The beginning of the American Revolution.  Paul Revere carried the message that “The British are coming!”
