1 Toward Independence Events leading up to declaring independence from England.

2 French and Indian War Conflict in Ohio Valley between the French/Indian and the British over land Lasted 7 years British won. Got the Ohio Valley and Canada

3 Proclamation of 1763 Conflict between Indians and colonists moving west into Ohio River Valley. King George drew a line down the Appalachian Mts. Proclamation: colonists east and Indians west of the line.

4 Stamp Act 1765 England had big debts from French & Indian War Stamp was required on all paper to help with debts Colonist were upset: No taxation w/o representation Loyalists refused to buy stamps; Patriots took violent action Parliament repealed the Act

5 Quartering Act 1765 Required colonists to house and feed soldiers Viewed by the colonists as another tax Colonists felt British soldiers we not needed

6 Townshend Act 1767 Enacted to pay for British soldiers in the colonies Import duty (tax) placed on glass, paint, paper, tea Colonists BOYCOTTED these products; hurt British merchants Parliament repealed all taxes except the one on TEA.

7 Boston Massacre1768 Friction between colonists and British troops in Boston. Confrontation resulted in 5 colonists being killed. Patriots felt all soldiers should be removed from the colonies. Loyalists felt there need to be more to keep order.

8 Boston Tea Party1773 Price of British tea lowered, but still included a tax. Colonists continued boycott. British required ships to unload tea before leaving Boston harbor. Sons of Liberty organized dumping of tea into the harbor.

9 Intolerable Acts 1774 In reaction to Boston Tea Party- to get control of colonies Boston harbor closed MA gov. shut down (under British control) more British soldiers sent to keep control of colonies Trial for British soldiers from Boston Massacre to be held in England.

10 First Continental Congress Sept. 1774 Goal was for peaceful solution with King George. Continued colony-wide boycott until repeal of Intolerable Acts repealed. Plan to meet again in May if no resolution. Begin colonial militia.

11 Lexington and Concord 1775 British march to get weapons the colonists had stashed in Concord Lexington: the British “win.” Concord: the militia “win” and turn back the British.
