2 Why did the colonists come to the New World? religion economy The British wanted to stretch their land and power across the Atlantic Ocean.

3 What did they find in the New World? Religious freedom land opportunity

4 What went wrong? French and Indian War 1754: Colonists begin to question loyalty to the King Colonists learned how to survive and fight. They learned that they did not need the British soldiers for protection. British realized they needed money to pay for the cost of the war. British thank Indians with the Proclamation!

5 Proclamation of 1763 can’t use Indian Land in the west If you’re there… get off! After this event, was it possible to avoid a war?

7 The Sons of Liberty are Formed – 1767 Colonists form a club to band together. Colonists began to rebel against the hated taxes. They smuggled goods, burned stamps, and teased the soldiers. British sent more and more troops.

8 Boston Tea Party : 1773 The Sons of Liberty dump tea into Boston Harbor The British forced the Colonists to buy goods from only British merchants. The Colonists were angry. The Colonists would not allow the tea to be unloaded so no tax would be paid. The tea remained on the ship. Dressed as Indians, the Sons of Liberty boarded the ship and tossed all the tea into the Boston Harbor. After this event, was it possible to avoid a war?

9 Britain gets Mad: Intolerable Acts Britain closed Boston Harbor until the tea was paid for in full. The Colonists could not hold town meetings The Colonists were forced to house the British soldiers. After this event, was it possible to avoid a war?

10 Colonists Unite Committees of Correspondence Continental Congress –all colonies represented –no more trade –won’t obey British laws –Patrick Henry… “give me liberty or give me death!”

11 Lexington and Concord British went to capture Hancock and Adams and lots of guns Paul Revere rode give a warning Patriots were ready “the shot heard ‘round the world”
