The Cost … … of Failure Wolverine Wednesday:

What does it take to graduate? Graduation Requirements: Earn a minimum of 23 credits Pass the GHSGT or EOCTs (Class of 2014) Pass all courses that have an EOCT (Classes of 2015, 2016, 2017) Math – 4 units required English – 4 units required Science – 4 units required Social Studies – 3 units required Health/PE – 1 unit required Career Tech/Foreign Lang/Fine Arts – 3 units required Electives – 4 units

How do I fail a class? Don’t bother taking notes Feel sorry for yourself and make excuses for failure Don’t write down assignments and due dates Wait until the last minute to begin working on a research paper, project, or assignment Leave your work at home or don’t do it at all Ignore directions Wait until the night before a test to start studying Don’t ask for help Don’t study and review every day Assume just reading or staring at a page is studying Blame others and do not take responsibility

Excuses For Failure The teacher doesn’t like me. I’ll never use this in life. I can’t do this / I’ll never get it. I don’t need to do homework, I get it. I shouldn’t have to do any work outside of school. I didn’t know we had a test/quiz/exam today! I don’t like my teacher’s teaching style. I’m not going to college. I forgot to study / I didn’t have time to study. The teacher doesn’t teach in the way I understand. Nobody looks at your calendar/website.

What if I fail a class? Summer School – 3 weeks in June (Monday – Friday) – 8: :00 and/or 12:30 - 4:30 – $200 per 0.5 credit – 2 classes maximum (1.0 credit) Polaris Evening School – Classes each quarter (nine weeks) – Monday – Thursday – 4:00 – 6:00, 6:00 – 8:00, 8:00 – 10:00 – 2 classes maximum, 1 credit (if enrolled in day school)

What if I fail a class? Apex – Online credit recovery – Math, Science, English, Social Studies, Foreign Language – Credit Connect (before/after school): $200/0.5 credit – Sometimes can be scheduled as an elective during the school day

Quick Quiz: If I fail both semesters of a class, how much does it cost to make up the whole year? How many credits can you make up in summer school? How many semesters can I fail before I am off track to graduate in four years without credit recovery?

ANSWERS: $400: you have to pay $200 for each semester of recovery You can only make up one whole credit in summer school. That’s a total of two failed semesters. Because you can earn up to 24 credits in four years and only need 23 credits to graduate, you can only fail two semester classes and still possibly stay on track. That’s not much room for failure!

DON’T FORGET…. Students will NOT receive credit for a course if they are in violation of the attendance policy Attendance Policy: 7 or more absences in one semester = NO CREDIT unless you are granted an attendance waiver

So, what is the cost of failure? $200 per semester class failed. 60 – 90 hours of time per semester class failed. Minimum of $15,080 in lost salary earnings per extra year of high school (based on 40 hours a $7.25 an hour) Less competitive transcript when applying for a post secondary school. Embarrassment: the year you graduate from high school follows you around forever. What other costs will you face if you don’t graduate high school on time?

Don’t forget to take your quizzes on Edmodo. Maybe you should write that down… Wolverine Wednesday:
