Unit 1 and 5 Staci, Ashley, and Chrissy

The Life Style of a Teacher

When Does Their Day Actually Begin?  Most teachers arrive at the school a half hour to 45 minutes before school starts to finish up work and get prepared for each class of the day. They make copies, correct some work, and write out the lesson plans for the day. In the younger classes, teachers tidy up their classes each morning before the students arrive.

How Much Planning Does Teaching Require Each Day?  All teacher have to plan out 7 hours of the day. When teaching elementary students, you have to have something for the kids to do every second of the day so that they don’t get out of control. The teachers of the older classes just have to make sure that they have an hours worth of work for each class. It obviously requires at least an hour to a couple hours in order to plan enough for all 7 hours that they teach.

Do Teachers Take Work Home in the Evening?  Most of the time, the elementary teachers have extra time while the kids have lunch and recess to grade things and do other work, but when it comes to high school and middle school teachers, they have a lot of papers to grade for every class. They have two choices: make time to do it during their busy day schedule or they have to take it home to correct.

What Does a Teacher Do in the Summer?  A lot of teachers get seasonal jobs to get extra money for the summer. Other teachers take advantage of the time off to spend with their family. Some just like to relax and enjoy summer how ever they want to. Once the summer starts coming to an end, they have to begin planning the next school year to have things prepared.

Being a Teacher Means Being a Role Model  When you are a teacher, all of your students look up to you. You have to be a good role model, even if you are outside of school. You never know who is watching you when you aren’t in your classroom. If you make one wrong move, it could make a negative impression to all of your students even if they didn’t witness it, word gets around. Then you look bad to your students and they don’t think of you as such a good role model anymore and some will lose respect for you. No matter where you are or when it is, you are always their teacher.

Unit 5: How Might You Perceive Your Educational Experience if You Were a Different Cultural Background?  If I was a student of a different cultural background, I probably wouldn’t perceive my education much different especially in a public school. I would think of myself as a regular student who is there to learn. I might pay attention more to the history lessons to learn more about my classmates culture rather than mine and maybe more to the English class. It is very important to schools that all students feel equal, so the teachers may teach in a different way to acknowledge different perspectives. For example, if I were a foreign exchange student I would just feel privileged to be there and take in as much knowledge as I could. I may not understand everything so I would need some extra help, but I don’t think I would perceive it much different.
