Myths and Facts About Time Management  Myth: I can do that later—there’s plenty of time!  Fact : If you have a long list of things to do, yet still believe that you can get it all done within a short period of time, you may not be budgeting your time correctly. You may not be giving yourself a realistic view of exactly what you need to get done.  On the other hand, if you only have a short list of things to do, why not do the tasks right away? Wouldn’t it be nice to get all the work out of the way now, so that you don’t have to stress about it at the last minute?  Myth: I can do that later—there’s plenty of time!  Fact : If you have a long list of things to do, yet still believe that you can get it all done within a short period of time, you may not be budgeting your time correctly. 7 Myths and Facts About Time Management  Myth : Once you learn self-discipline, time management is easy.  Fact : It may feel great to plan your life out in such an orderly manner, but time management is definitely not easy. By prioritizing parts of your life, you must say no to other things. You might have to spend more time on one, uninteresting task, instead of jumping to the task that you want to do.  In addition, self-discipline is not something that you just choose to have, and then have it forever. All students, employees, and parents must continually discipline themselves to practice good time management techniques.  Myth : Once you learn self-discipline, time management is easy.  Fact : It may feel great to plan your life out in such an orderly manner, but time management is definitely not easy. 8 Myths and Facts About Time Management  Myth: Rescheduling something to a later time or day is procrastinating.  Fact : Rescheduling and procrastinating are not the same things. Rescheduling is taking a new, maybe unexpected, task and working it into your current schedule. If another task then needs to be moved to the next day, to make room for the new priority, that is OK.  You are procrastinating if you do not do the task at all or if you put-off doing it for the wrong reasons, such as watching television or talking on the phone.  Myth: Rescheduling something to a later time or day is procrastinating.  Fact : Rescheduling and procrastinating are not the same things. 9 What is time management?  Time management is effective scheduling, using time to your best advantage. When you schedule your time effectively, you accomplish more during a certain period of time.  The more you get done, the higher your performance rate.  Time management is effective scheduling, using time to your best advantage. When you schedule your time effectively, you accomplish more during a certain period of time.  The more you get done, the higher your performance rate.

How do you know if your scheduling is effective?  Are you able to do everything you need to do and still have time to do the things you like to do?  For example, after you finish your homework, do you still have time for other activities?  Are you able to do everything you need to do and still have time to do the things you like to do?  For example, after you finish your homework, do you still have time for other activities?  After you participate in activities, do you have time to do your homework?  When you finish your homework early, do you use that time to prepare for the next day?  Are you able to say “no” to something you would like to do, because there are other things you need to do?  If you answer no to any of the above questions, your scheduling probably is not as effective as it could be.

There are lots of reasons why effectively managing your time is good for you.  For example, at the end of a long day, it’s nice to crash in your own room and zone out, watching your favorite show – but is it healthy?  New research found that teens with televisions in their bedrooms were less likely to eat vegetables, exercise, study, or have regular family meals. And – surprise – they actually watch more TV, too.  For example, at the end of a long day, it’s nice to crash in your own room and zone out, watching your favorite show – but is it healthy?  New research found that teens with televisions in their bedrooms were less likely to eat vegetables, exercise, study, or have regular family meals. In addition, as you get older, greater demands will be placed on your time. You will be better prepared to meet these demands if you prepare now and know how to schedule your time effectively. Plus, the better you manage your time now, the more free time you’ll have to enjoy.

The Benefits of Time Management  You may often find yourself saying “I don’t have enough time for that” or wondering why other people are able to get more done. Sometimes it is simply a matter of figuring out how to organize yourself—and your time—better.  Planning how you spend your time can help you bring your time under control and use it better.  You can choose how you will spend your time.  Once you have your time effectively scheduled, you will have your life under control—which means that you will be able to do more of the things you have to do and more of the things you want to do!

How can you manage your time to help meet your goals?  One method is to put the “have to do” before the “want to do” in order to accomplish your goals.  For example, on your last test you made a D in Biology. Your goal is to make a higher grade. What do you need to do now?  You need to devote more time to studying and possibly change your study methods. Studying just during the commercial of a movie or your favorite TV show may not be the best way to improve your grades.  You can group tasks together—e.g., baby-sitting your brother with cleaning your room.  Lastly, use outside resources, such as asking one of your buddies to get your project supplies for you.  One method is to put the “have to do” before the “want to do” in order to accomplish your goals.  For example, on your last test you made a D in Biology. Straighten your room before going out this weekend (a requirement from your mother).  F. You have a project due in 2 days but you are required by your group to go to the store to purchase the supplies they will be using in class the next day.  A.
