.. HFM Distance Learning Project Student Survey 2003 – 2004 School Year BOCES Distance Learning Program Quality Access Support Student Comments 1. I took Distance Learning because: ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________________________ I wanted to learn about psychology, get AP credit and interact with students from another school. I am interested in becoming a criminologist. I was extremely interested in mythology and wanted to participate in the class. I was not aware that it was a DL class. Wells doesn’t offer world mythology. That’s where my health class was taking place. I needed it to graduate. I wanted the learning experience. I thought it would be interesting. it was different from the everyday classroom. French V is only offered through DL. I wanted college credit. It is an interesting way of learning and you get to meet new people. Section C

.. HFM Distance Learning Project Student Survey 2003 – 2004 School Year BOCES Distance Learning Program Quality Access Support Student Comments Section C Students most frequently said they took Distance Learning because: They wanted that particular subject. The subject they wanted was only offered in DL. They needed that course. They were interested in the technology. They wanted AP or college credit. They were interested in meeting new students. They wanted to try something different.

.. HFM Distance Learning Project Student Survey 2003 – 2004 School Year BOCES Distance Learning Program Quality Access Support Student Comments 2. What did you like about Distance Learning? ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________________________ It was a different atmosphere to learn in and it was fun to interact with a different teacher and students. It was a chance to meet new people in a new school as well as to learn about things that we wouldn't normally have had offered to us. I think it’s a good opportunity to meet and work with new people and it’s a nice change from regular classrooms. The class itself was interesting and I wouldn’t have been able to take it without DL. I liked meeting people from other schools and working with a teacher that I have never worked with before. It is simple and easy to communicate. The class was small with less pressure and we had a good teacher. Section C

.. HFM Distance Learning Project Student Survey 2003 – 2004 School Year BOCES Distance Learning Program Quality Access Support Student Comments Section C Most frequently noted as being liked by DL students: Meeting and interacting with different students, teachers and schools. A new experience working with the advanced technology. An interesting and comfortable Learning environment. The opportunity to take a class not otherwise offered. The subject or course material. The teacher or teaching assistant.

.. HFM Distance Learning Project Student Survey 2003 – 2004 School Year BOCES Distance Learning Program Quality Access Support Student Comments 3. What didn’t you like about Distance Learning? ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________________________ It was very boring because the (teacher’s) style of teaching is limited to notes…all the time. No one paid attention to me. The technology at the sites had broken down in the beginning of the year. Sometimes it was hard to hear the other people. Some days we wouldn't even have class because the system wasn't working. The other class started later than ours. We would start a test before they got there so we would have enough time and when they came in they were loud and disturbing. Sometimes the other class would be too loud or they would unplug their mikes and we couldn't hear them. I didn’t like not having the chance to get extra help from the teacher. Section C

.. HFM Distance Learning Project Student Survey 2003 – 2004 School Year BOCES Distance Learning Program Quality Access Support Technical problems with audio or poor student/microphone/camera positioning. Disruptive students or lack of discipline. Student Comments Section C Most frequently noted as being disliked by DL students: Lack of extra help or lack of one-on-one with the teacher. Lack of interaction with or lack of attention from teacher or other students. Not dealing effectively with bell schedule or school calendar differences.

.. HFM Distance Learning Project Student Survey 2003 – 2004 School Year BOCES Distance Learning Program Quality Access Support Student Comments 4. What changes would you suggest for the Distance Learning classes? ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________________________ I suggest a better sound system and way of transferring papers to other schools and that you adjust the levels of the mics so we can hear things better. I would suggest that the teachers ask direct questions to kids from the different schools. I would suggest having the classes visit each other once in a while. The teacher should come to our school more often. I suggest you try to match up classes that start and finish at the same times. I suggest that students be more prepared and respectful because it becomes difficult for the other class if they are not. I would make sure the classes started at the same time, cut down class size, and make sure everyone can be heard clearly. I suggest that there should be a chance to meet in person and a field trip to a class related place. Section C

.. HFM Distance Learning Project Student Survey 2003 – 2004 School Year BOCES Distance Learning Program Quality Access Support Student Comments Section C Most frequently suggested changes: Deal more effectively with bell schedule and school calendar differences. Visits by teachers to remote classes and or combined class field trips. Technical improvements and better student/microphone/camera positioning. More balanced attention to classes and better interaction. More discipline to deal with disruptive and disrespectful students.

.. HFM Distance Learning Project Student Survey 2003 – 2004 School Year BOCES Distance Learning Program Quality Access Support Student Comments 5. What surprised you about Distance Learning? ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________________________ I thought it would be hard to understand the teacher in the other school, but is went perfectly fine. I was surprised that you could hear the people in the other class so well. It was actually a really enjoyable class and the teacher is really able to give each student the attention they need. How easy it was to interact with the other class. It was a lot more like a regular class than I thought it would be. I was surprised at the way in which all the classes interacted. I was surprised at the fact that it is just like any other classroom, but we were watching TV's instead of a teacher. Section C

.. HFM Distance Learning Project Student Survey 2003 – 2004 School Year BOCES Distance Learning Program Quality Access Support Student Comments Section C Most frequently noted as surprising about distance learning: That it is unexpectedly easy to become comfortable with the system. Interaction with remote teachers and students was easy. The environment is comfortable and enjoyable. It worked so well. An appreciation for the advanced technology. A need for more discipline in some classes.

.. HFM Distance Learning Project Student Survey 2003 – 2004 School Year BOCES Distance Learning Program Quality Access Support Student Comments I didn’t feel there were any limitations. Yes, the teacher did make effort(s) to compensate for limitations in the DL system. No, the teacher did not make an effort to compensate for limitations in the DL system. 6. Did you feel the teacher made an effort to compensate for any limitations in the DL system? Host SitesReceive Sites Section C

.. HFM Distance Learning Project Student Survey 2003 – 2004 School Year BOCES Distance Learning Program Quality Access Support Student Comments (If you answered “No”) Please describe what you wish your teacher could have done. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________________________ I wish the teacher could have given a little more attention to the other sites, not just his. I wish that he had asked questions to us. I wish she answered each question individually. I wish we could have had more hands on. I know it is difficult to operate lab activities from a distance but something other than reading would have been helpful. She could have given us class time for projects so we could ask necessary questions. Section C

.. HFM Distance Learning Project Student Survey 2003 – 2004 School Year BOCES Distance Learning Program Quality Access Support Students that feel the teacher did not make an effort to compensate Section C Students most frequently wished that the teacher would: Not ignore their remote students or pay less attention to the receive sites. Offer some opportunity for one-on-one interaction. (Only 5% of the total number of responding students felt the teacher did not make an effort to compensate for the limitations of the network.) Provide some variety in the lesson structure.

.. HFM Distance Learning Project Student Survey 2003 – 2004 School Year BOCES Distance Learning Program Quality Access Support Student Comments (If you answered “Yes”) Please describe the efforts the teacher made to compensate. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________________________ The teacher tried to keep everyone focused and interacted with all the classes on the network. Our teacher talked to everyone equally. She and the aide made sure everything was faxed to the other class. The aide in Fonda did the experiments with them that we did here. The teacher made a schedule to compensate for various school schedule complications. Mrs. Holland came to our school to teach and do experiments with us. She came over here and held study sessions. She arranged a trip to Montreal so we could all get to know each other better. She made her e-mail address available and always made sure she asked us if we had any questions. He contacted someone to fix the sound system when the other school forgot to shut off their security system. Section C

.. HFM Distance Learning Project Student Survey 2003 – 2004 School Year BOCES Distance Learning Program Quality Access Support Section C Most Frequently Recognized DL Teacher Efforts Students that feel the teacher did make an effort to compensate: Visited receive sites and promoted interaction between schools. Made e-mail and/or phone contact available. Provided extra help and review sessions. Made efforts to resolve technical issues. Used technology to its fullest.
