Robert K. Greenleaf (1904–1990) was the founder of the modern Servant leadership movement and the Greenleaf Center for Servant Leadership. According to his essay, "Essentials of Servant Leadership", Greenleaf’s philosophy had its roots from reading a work of fiction in 1958: The idea of the servant as leader came out of reading Hermann Hesse’s Journey to the East.

Characteristics Servant leadership is a philosophy and set of practices that enriches the lives of individuals, builds better organizations and ultimately creates a more just and caring world. A servant-leader focuses primarily on the growth and well-being of people and the communities to which they belong. The servant-leader shares power, puts the needs of others first and helps people develop and perform as highly as possible.

Differences between being a boss and being a leader For a boss authority is a privilege, for a good leader is a privilege to serve. The boss thinks and feels “I am the one who orders”, a good leader inspires convinced that “I serve here” The boss inspires fear, threats and his team is afraid of him. A leader inspires trust, gives power to his people, enthusiasm. The boss wants obedience, the leader motivation.

The boss says, “go work”, the leader says “let’s work together”. The boss assigns tasks and orders, the leader invites, shows how to do it, works with you. The boss arrives on time. The leader arrives earlier and stays later. The boss manages people, the leader prepares people to be better than him.
