Cancer Notes 7th Grade Health Mr. Alvarez 2007

What is Cancer?  (Standard 5.b, Cancer)  STATE STANDARD: 5. The anatomy and physiology of plants and animals illustrate the complementary nature of structure and function.  5.b. organ systems function because of the contribution of individual organs, tissues, and cells. The failure of any part can affect the entire systems.

What is Cancer?  A mutation changes the DNA causing cells to multiply uncontrollably forming a tumor & killing healthy tissues around it.

What is Cancer?  Two kinds of tumors…  Malignant = spreading tumor into other tissues (cancerous) BAD  Benign = non cancerous tumor. GOOD

Stages of Cancer

Cancer Causes  UV rays - from sunlight

Cancer Causes  Tanning booths

Cancer Causes  Fatty foods and sweets  Tobacco - smoking or chewing

Cancer Causes  Soot - black tar from chimneys  Asbestos - found in walls of old buildings

Cancer Treatment  Radiation - High energy beams of light to blow up the Cancer cells.

Cancer Treatment  Chemotherapy - strong drugs to destroy cancer cells in the blood with loss of hair as a side effect.

Cancer Treatment  Surgery - operation to remove any tumor cells from the body that radiation or chemotherapy can not get.

Cancer Prevention  Sun Block - to protect from UV rays  Proper Diet - healthy foods

Cancer Prevention  No smoking or chewing tobacco  Mask for working with soot or asbestos.
