2 III. Cancer A. def – group of severe & sometimes fatal diseases caused by uncontrolled cell growth B. Each year more than 1 million Americans are diagnosed with cancer C. Tumors form when a cell can no longer be controlled 1. it divides & produces more defective cells D. Benign Tumor 1. does not spread to other parts of the body & can be surgically removed E. Malignant Tumor 1. invades & spreads to nearby healthy tissues 2. Metastasis a. cancer cells breaking off & moving to other parts of the body to reproduce

3 F. Treatment 1. Chemotherapy - using drugs to cure
2. Radiation therapy 3. Surgery G. Prevention 1. Stay away from things that cause cancer. a. UV light, cigarettes, etc.
