2 1911: Republican Revolution overthrew Qing Dynasty. 1912: Yuan Shikai became president and later dictator. 1916-1927: Warlord Period. 1927: Nationalists turned on Communists after defeating warlords.

3 1934: Communists went on Long March. 1931-1945: Japanese invasion. 1945: Communists and Nationalists battled for control of China. 1949: Nationalists fled to Taiwan. Communists were victorious and proclaimed the People’s Republic of China.
