12 3 Substrate is converted
Enzymes Are a type of protein that acts as a catalyst, speeding up chemical reactions Substrate (sucrose) 1 Active site is available for a molecule of substrate, the reactant on which the enzyme acts. 2. Substrate binds to enzyme. Enzyme (sucrase) Glucose OH H2O H O Fructose 3 Substrate is converted to products. 4 Products are released.

13 There is an enzyme called Catalase found in MOST organisms.
PRE- LAB INFORMATION FOR: ENZYME ACTION LAB There is an enzyme called Catalase found in MOST organisms. This enzyme has the ability to break down H2O (which is Hydrogen Peroxide) Hydrogen Peroxide is toxic to most living organisms. H2O2 is naturally produced in organisms as a by-product of cellular respiration (when your cells are making energy). Catalase quickly arrives on the scene to destroy the Hydrogen Peroxide before it can do too much damage.

14 Catalase speeds up the process of breaking down the Hydrogen Peroxide molecule into water and oxygen. 2 H2O H2O + O2 2 H2O2 2 H2O O2 2 H2O2
