2. Who Was Henry Stanley?  Welsh Journalist  Born January 28, 1841  Known for finding David Livingstone

3. What has he accomplished in life?  Received a gold medal from the Royal Geographical Society(BBC)  Knighted by the British crown in 1899  Sat in Parliament as a Liberal Unionist for North Lambeth from 1895-1900

4. First Experience in Africa  Commissioned by the New York Herald to find and interview David Livingstone  Set out with 200 men from Zanzibar  Found the explorer in Ujiji after eight months

5. Second experience in Africa  Returned to Africa in 1874 to find the source of the Nile  Navigated the length of the Congo River  Signed trade treaties on behalf of Leopold II of Belgium with African chiefs

6. What was the Trade Treaty?  Established a trade route along the Congo River to transport ivory  Helped established the Congo Free State

7. How is he connected to the novella?  The main character was an ivory transporter along the Congo River  Henry Stanley was one of the men that established this trade route

8. Ivory Trade  Leopold II of Belgium wanted ivory desperately  Didn’t have to be processed  Sold it for 150 percent profit  Used in jewelry, carvings, and piano keys

9. Result of the Trade Treaties  In the beginning Africa traded ivory for beads and other goods  By the end, Belgium agents were taking ivory by force  If the Congolese didn’t meet their quota then their hands and feet were removed

10. Poaching of the Elephants  The demand for ivory resulted in the poaching of many elephants  The ivory needed to be extracted from the elephant’s tusks  The poachers had to kill them to cut out the tusks

11. How would he be received today?  Henry Stanley would not be received well today  Today it is illegal to poach animals  He was one of the main men who caused the atrocities of the trade treaties
