Who Was Henry Stanley? Welsh Journalist Born January 28, 1841 Known for finding David Livingstone

What has he accomplished in life? Received a gold medal from the Royal Geographical Society(BBC) Knighted by the British crown in 1899 Sat in Parliament as a Liberal Unionist for North Lambeth from 1895-1900

First Experience in Africa Commissioned by the New York Herald to find and interview David Livingstone Set out with 200 men from Zanzibar Found the explorer in Ujiji after eight months

Second experience in Africa Returned to Africa in 1874 to find the source of the Nile Navigated the length of the Congo River Signed trade treaties on behalf of Leopold II of Belgium with African chiefs

Result of the Trade Treaties In the beginning Africa traded ivory for beads and other goods By the end, Belgium agents were taking ivory by force If the Congolese didn’t meet their quota then their hands and feet were removed

Poaching of the Elephants The demand for ivory resulted in the poaching of many elephants The ivory needed to be extracted from the elephant’s tusks The poachers had to kill them to cut out the tusks

How would he be received today? Henry Stanley would not be received well today Today it is illegal to poach animals He was one of the main men who caused the atrocities of the trade treaties
