3 Discussion Notes Take out last nights homework as a reference to help you and your partner answer the following Q’s. Write down your answers in your book and add during discussion. What were some of the forms of government used in Greek City States? Oligarchy, Aristocracy, monarchy, Democracy What was early Athenian Democracy like? And How did Solon and Cleisthenes work to change it? Elections but few could vote, Solon = all men are citizens, Cleisthenese = all citizens can propose laws # 5

4 What is a direct democracy and how did Pericles’ reforms help create it? his reforms, paid public officials/paying jurors, got more citizens involved, greater participation How might greek philosophers like Socrates, Plato, and Aristotle help to strengthen or develop democracy? They asked citizens to question themselves and authority, proposed that leaders should be intelligent instead of just strong, and recognized mans need for self-governance.

5 How was the Roman Republic different than Athenian Direct Democracy? ? ? Instead of voting on each law directly, one voted on a representative to make laws. Follow-up:Which do you think is better? Why? Why is writing down laws, like the 12 Tables, important in a democracy? So all people are aware of what they can and cannot do and protects the people of government abuses.
