1 CEFPI is a Registered Provider with The American Institute of Architects Continuing Education Systems (AIA/CES). Credit(s) earned on completion of this program will be reported to AIA/CES for AIA members. Certificates of Completion for both AIA members and non-AIA members are available upon request. This program is registered with AIA/CES for continuing professional education. As such, it does not include content that may be deemed or construed to be an approval or endorsement by the AIA of any material of construction or any method or manner of handling, using, distributing, or dealing in any material or product. Questions related to specific materials, methods, and services will be addressed at the conclusion of each presentation.

3 Learning Objectives How the Environment Impacts Children’s Health At the end of this program, participants will be able to: 1. understand the definition of chronic disease 2. understand prevalence of childhood obesity in North Carolina 3. understand behavioral and environmental risk factors of obesity 4. understand how education facility planners can impact/reduce environmental risks associated with obesity

4 Learning Objectives Schools as Teaching Tools At the end of this program, participants will be able to: 1. understand the relationships of building components to the core curriculum study courses 2. understand ways to achieve effective demonstration of the building systems to the occupants and user groups 3. understand the links between the built environment and the various learning types 4. know about opportunities to consider curriculum development in the design and development in relation to technical systems of the project

5 Learning Objectives Performance for Dollars 1 At the end of this program, participants will be able to: 1. understand Solar Hot Water System design, installation and potential use in public school facilities 2. understand Solar Photovoltaic System design, installation and potential use in public school facilities 3. understand building solar orientation, roof area and structural design required for these systems 4. know about payback periods for both systems, alternative funding available and interaction and connection with electric utilities

6 Learning Objectives Healthy School Campuses At the end of this program, participants will be able to: 1. integrate nature into curriculum to create more active, attentive and healthy students 2. know that fitness and nutrition can be integrated into curriculum and project- based learning 3. know how to overcome funding obstacles and sell the project to the public and school boards 4. know how to get community support and mentorship for outdoor learning projects

7 Learning Objectives Performance for Dollars II At the end of this program, participants will be able to: 1. know how successful Public Private Partnership projects were delivered in other states 2. know about proposed changes in the current State Statute that may make it a more desirable construction method for schools in NC 3. know about the dos and don’ts of PPP 4. know how people from different areas feel about PPP

8 Learning Objectives Design, Build, Transform: Growing Creative Capital in the Next Generation At the end of this program, participants will be able to: 1. know how design and the creative thought process can be taught in the public school system 2. know how that process can transform both students and the local public school educational system 3. know which North Carolina General Statutes apply 4. know about products and services available through Purchasing Groups

9 Learning Objectives USDA Funding At the end of this program, participants will be able to: 1. understand the implications of Competitive Bidding Group Purchasing Programs 2. know what kind of projects they can be used for 3. know how that process can provide valuable community projects to a rural and poor county 4. know how that process can energize the design community and their approach to the design of educational facilities

10 Learning Objectives What Really Works for Schools At the end of this program, participants will be able to: 1. appreciate the fact that building green, if designed through a whole-building, whole-site, integrated approach, doesn’t necessarily have to cost more 2. understand some important points on key principles and design processes that they could effectively implement in their own architectural firms 3. know about the most common green design errors 4. know, through examples, that the learned strategies do work

12 Learning Objectives Waste Management for Campuses At the end of this program, participants will be able to: 1. know about overall sustainable policies and initiatives being practiced on 2 university/college campuses in NC 2. know about waste management policies and initiatives practices on 2 university/college campuses in NC 3. know about specific waste management policies and initiatives for food service waste management, including onsite and offsite composting 4. know about specific waste management policies that involve students on campus to participate in sustainable activities

13 Learning Objectives Tour Edible School Yard – Greensboro Children’s Museum At the end of this program, participants will be able to: 1. know about positive impact of gardening to enhance the development of the whole child 2. know about the history of school gardening and the specific history of the Edible Schoolyard 3. know the children experience the garden by smelling, seeing, tasting and touching the many edible plants grown in the 4. know about planting and maintaining gardens with the school calendar in mind

14 Learning Objectives American Hebrew Academy, Greensboro, NC At the end of this program, participants will be able to: 1. know about a unique campus design by Aaron Greene 2. know about individual building design that includes daylighting, organic design and integration into a natural landscape 3. know about one of the largest geothermal heat pump systems in the USA and its campus wide use, including future facilities 4. know about the campus wide cutting edge technology system and its use on a high school boarding campus
