1 CEFPI is a Registered Provider with The American Institute of Architects Continuing Education Systems (AIA/CES). Credit(s) earned on completion of this program will be reported to AIA/CES for AIA members. Certificates of Completion for both AIA members and non-AIA members are available upon request. This program is registered with AIA/CES for continuing professional education. As such, it does not include content that may be deemed or construed to be an approval or endorsement by the AIA of any material of construction or any method or manner of handling, using, distributing, or dealing in any material or product. Questions related to specific materials, methods, and services will be addressed at the conclusion of each presentation.

2 Learning Objectives The Geometry of Pedagogy At the end of this program, participants will be able to: 1. Gain an understanding of the impact of furniture and its arrangement on the psyche of the users. 2. Understand how traditional design favors “sage on stage” pedagogy. 3. Understand that emergent education needs environments that are flexible and supportive of movement. 4. Know what kind of features are needed for a flexible design and what kind of furniture and arrangement become conducive to creative and organic learning.

Know about school tools for change in teaching-learning relation. 2. Understand how collaboration, communication and aid in promotion of ideas can be improved through social media. 3. Know how to improve the design process by better reaching teachers, staff and communities. 4. Know about the potential effects of social media on the built environment.

4 Learning Objectives LEED EB: O&M and Schools: Perspective from USGBC & Hillsboro School District At the end of this program, participants will be able to: 1. Know what the LEED EB: O&M rating system is, how this third-party certification program works and how it is different fro other LEED rating systems. 2. Know why green operations and third-party certification are relevant for school facility management and how they are applied to existing schools. 3. Know about specific, practical and measurable outcomes and lessons learned from a one-year pilot green operations program. 4. Know how the program has helped identify additional opportunities for reducing costs and creating healthier school environments.

5 Learning Objectives Beauty in Design: Humanity and Nature in a Timeless Built Environment At the end of this program, participants will be able to: 1. Know what beauty has to do with timelessness, adaptability and durability. 2. Know why the Living Building Challenge includes a category or “petal” for beauty and how it has been considered, incorporated and judged. 3. Know about the framework for considering the qualities of beauty in the building environment. 4. Know how considerations of beauty in our buildings and the natural surroundings contribute to better school design.

6 Learning Objectives The Building Envelope: Why Be Concerned, and What to Do about It At the end of this program, participants will be able to: 1. Know why many building envelope systems including roofs, exterior walls, and windows are not built right the first time. 2. Know about the process for involving a building envelope consultant in the design and construction phases of your project.. 3. Know about building envelope requirements and credits outlined in the 2010 Edition of the Washington Sustainable Schools Protocol. 4. Know about a recent project where the specialty services of a building envelope consultant lead to a successful building re-clad at a community college.

7 Learning Objectives Protecting Children’s Health in the School Environment At the end of this program, participants will be able to: 1. Know why we should care about protecting the environmental health of our schools, children and staff. 2. Know about the opportunities to work together to address the challenges and barriers to improving school environment health. 3. Know how best facilitate creating environmental health in schools. 4. Know about resources available to educators, designers and teachers to best serve the students.

8 Learning Objectives Social Networking for Growth At the end of this program, participants will be able to: 1. Know about the 7 social media secrets that apply to all school districts. 2. Know about the 7 essentials of social media for business including telling your story, communicating your identity and adding value. 3. Know how to develop social media strategies that allow individuals to connect to build a strong support network. 4. Examine the potential effects of social media on the built environment.

Know what makes a learning experience powerful and how can this be impacted by the physical environment and technology. 2. Know about virtual learning spaces – how this technology affects learning, requirements for integration into schools. 3. Know how the selected MacConnell projects support powerful learning experiences with 21 st century technology and social media. 4. Examine the implications of social media end technology with regards to teaching, facility design, infrastructural requirements, ergonomics and budgeting..

10 Learning Objectives Historic Schools: Preservation, Sustainability & Educational Transformation At the end of this program, participants will be able to: 1. Know how historic school renovation can support sustainable goals. 2. Know how to balance preservation priorities, seismic upgrades and efficient energy management. 3. Know about new design approaches for new construction additions to historic school sites. 4. Know how historic preservation can meet budget needs and sustainable design requirements.

11 Learning Objectives Sustainable School Food Program At the end of this program, participants will be able to: 1. Know how to use a food program to teach sustainability (buy locally, organically grown, recycling, etc.). 2. Know how to use a food program to raise money for sustainable projects. 3. Know how to improve students’ health and awareness through a food program. 4. Know how to start a recycling and composting program in schools.

12 Learning Objectives Design & Learning: Shared Dialogue with Creativity At the end of this program, participants will be able to: 1. Know about new ergonomic furnishings for educational spaces. 2. Examine the impact of community relations on school planning. 3. Examine the planning implications of project-based learning. 4. Examine the design implications of future technologies entering the educational system.

13 Learning Objectives Otto Petersen Elementary School/Ross Parks Elementary School At the end of this program, participants will be able to: 1. Know about stormwater retention for use in schools and community gardens. 2. Know about possible great results from public/private partnerships. 3. Know how daylighting and playful colors help to enliven students senses in the indoor environments, and how to enhance wellness and health with sustainable choices in terms of materials and resources. 4. Know about water and energy conservation measures, as well as photovoltaic panels for regenerative energy.

14 Learning Objectives Vancouver School of the Arts and Academics/Helen Baller Elementary School At the end of this program, participants will be able to: 1. Know about the use of non-toxic floor coverings for schools, and radiant floor heating. 2. Know about bioswale systems for rainwater. 3. Know about energy savings through proper building orientation and natural ventilation. 4. Know about the Washington Sustainable Schools Protocol.
