Induction: How to Get a Clear Credential Multiple Subject Student Teaching Orientation Next Steps Into the Teaching Profession

Your First Credential Is called a Preliminary Credential Is good for five years Is a ‘2042’ Multiple Subject Credential Has “CLAD” certification built-in

How to Clear Your Credential You must clear through an Induction Program which means you must have a teaching job to clear your credential. Induction programs may be operated by districts, COEs, consortiums or universities. CSUSB does NOT have a Clear Credential Induction Program

What If??? You don’t get a teaching position? You get a position in a charter school? You get a position in a private school? You move out of state? See the CTC Handout 4B on extension options

What is Induction? A two year period of support for new teachers With an assigned support provider who is a veteran teacher trained to mentor new teachers Focused on your professional development based on your teaching assignment and your current knowledge and skills The cost is just over $4000 a year but currently there is a state grant to cover the cost for public school teachers.

How Does It Work? You meet regularly with your support provider for timely help with current events You work with the California Standards for the Teaching Profession (CSTP) You complete a ‘curriculum’ called FACT Formative Assessment for California Teachers Watch this short BTSA video!

FACT Starts with gathering information about your class, school and community and your attitudes, skills and knowledge Proceeds with an Inquiry which is very similar to action research and will focus on an area of teaching you need to improve Ends with a reflection on what you learned and what you still need

How is Induction Different From the Credential Program? Compare the Induction process with your experiences in teacher preparation How are they similar? How are they different?

Any Questions? Any last questions for today? Email me if you have more questions later Dr. Sue Spitzer, sspitzer@csusb.edu
