7 European Royal Families  Most of the European leaders were related to each other  Kings of England, Germany, and Russia are cousins  Hoped that by connecting royal families future wars would be prevented  Alliances were set up to further protect peace

8  Leaders would regularly get together  Queen Victoria’s funeral  Weddings  Rivalries and jealousies began to grow  Almost everyone hated Kaiser WIlhelm

11 Increased Militarism by 1914  Militarism – Glorification of the Military  None of the European countries had fought a major war for several generations  Public sentiments that warfare is a grand and honorable adventure  Dulce et decorum est  It is sweet and proper to die for your country  Kaiser Wilhelm started programs to greatly increase Germany’s military  Other countries responded by building up their own militaries

13 Alliances  Alliance – Partnership between countries  Germany, Austria- Hungary, and Italy agree to protect each other  Russia and France form a secret entente  Understanding to help each other out  Eventually England joined the entente out of fear of Germany

14 Nationalism in 1914  Nationalism – Pride in your country  Industrial developments, inventions, and growth led to pride within countries  Rivalries between Leaders also brought increased nationalism  Kaiser Wilhelm was jealous of his British cousins  England was worried about German growth

15 Nationalism  Russia promoted Pan-Slavism  Idea that all Slavik people should support each other  Russia and Serbia are both Slavik nations  Ethnic Groups in Austria-Hungary and Ottoman Empires fought for independence  Especially in the Baltic region

16 Imperialism  Countries competed to conquer the best land with the most natural resources  England had the largest empire (Canada, India, Australia)  Berlin Conference 1884 – European leaders divided up African colonies to avoid war  Kaiser Wilhelm was jealous that Germany’s empire was much smaller than his cousins’

17 Assassination  Serbians are fighting for independence from Austria-Hungarian Empire  Archduck Franz Ferdinand of Austria is heir to the thrown  He is next in line to be Emperor when his Uncle dies  Serbian terrorist group called Unity of Death (aka Black Hand) decides to take action  On June 28,1914 Gavrilo Princip assassinated Archduke Franz Ferdinand
