18. What is an airway? Why clear the airway? Why do you need air? Why do you choke? How do you clear the airway Head tilt/chin lift or jaw thrust (spinal injury) Check airway (food) Clear – colar, jaw

Body Position Position helps airway by allowing fluids/vomit to drain out Only to be used when spinal injury is NOT suspected If spinal injury is suspected, the patient must be secured solidly to a rigid board so that the body can be turned to the side as a total unit (can also use Jaw thrust for suspected spinal injuries).
