2 F. Sugar Act Why did the British pass the Sugar Act? To collect taxes from the colonists, to make money because of the French and Indian War Who was the Prime Minister of Great Britain at this time? George Grenville What slogan emerged from this? “No Taxation without Representation” What did the slogan mean? The colonists didn’t agree with the tax because they weren’t being represented in British Parliament How did the act violate the colonists’ rights? No representation in Parliament What were the Committees of Correspondence and who started it? Meant for communication between the Colonies Started by Samuel Adams

3 G. Trade Laws What were they? Laws enforcing the Navigation Acts (regulating who the colonists trade with) What is the problem with the customs officers? They are corrupt How did the laws violate the colonists’ rights? Accused had to prove they were innocent Taken out of the colonies for their trial

4 H. Quartering Act What did it allow? British soldiers to be housed (and supplied) in private homes What did the British do when NY refused to do it? Suspended their power of their assembly (taking power away from the colony)

5 I. Stamp Act What did it say? -Required colonists to pay for an official stamp, or seal, whenever they bought printed items What items required a sticky stamp? -newspaper, cards, playing cards, marriage licenses, dice, calendars Who were the Sons of Liberty? -educated group of colonial men that led protests to taxes What is a boycott? -refusal to buy goods Was the boycott successful? (explain) -yes, because it hurt London merchants who complained to king who in turn repealed the Stamp Act How many colonies pledged loyalty to the Kings? -9 out of the 13 What did the British do about the Stamp Act? -Repealed it
