Kosovo Conflict Kevin and Jen

Kosovo Location

Ethnic Groups Albanians: 92.9% of population -located mostly in the center and along east and west coasts. They are in these regions because Albanians already occupied the entire region but were pushed out of the north and south regions because of Serbs. Serbs: 1.5% of population -The original population of Kosova before it became a country, therefore the serbs are dispersed across the land Turks: 1.1% of population -In 1389, Turks migrated to Serbia (now Kosovo) after the battle of Kosovo and after the conflict with Serbia and gained independence, Turkish people still considered albanians a minority. The time passed along with new laws to create peace with Turkey and the Turkish community in Kosovo. three new democratic parties were created including, Turkish Public front, Turkish Democratic Union, and the Kosovo Turkish Democratic Party (KTDP) albania serbia

Ethnic Groups pt.2 Bosniaks: 1.6% of population -Southeastern Peja region and compose about 10% of the local Pizren population. Bosniaks are located in this region because they are all grouped together in a condensed city just like birds of a feather flock together. The president of Kosovo is considering to create municipalities in either Peja or Pizren, Kosovo because of their high concentration of Bosniaks.

Cause of Conflict what is the conflict? -The Kosovo conflict is a war that broke out when albanians wanted their own state due to lack of interest in Yugoslavian government and serbian ethnicities but the serbs retaliated with armed forces because they thought it was wrong that albanians were in control of the land held sacred to the serbs. This led to ethnic cleansing issued by the Yugoslav and Serbian forces, then the UN then intervened. -This conflict was caused by Ibrahim Rugova (leader of ethnic albanians in serbian province of Kosovo) in 1989 when he initiated peaceful protests against Serbian/ Yugoslavian government and armed forces stroke back.

Cultural Conflict -Religion had an impact on this conflict because Kosovo wanted their own state that happened to be over sacred land to ethnic serbs and this angered them and caused the war to break out worse than before. -Land use is one of the cultural conflicts because serbs want the land to be theirs and pure/ cleansed of albanians. The serbian population and government are against the use of serbian land being used by albanians and take action with an ethnic cleansing movement as an attempt to get their land back before NATO intervenes.

Outside Forces Impact -Many countries known as the Contact Group, including the United states, Great Britain, Germany, France, Italy, and Russia, demanded a ceasefire and withdrawal of the armed forces in Kosovo. This impacted the war because it pulled in majorly globalized countries to call for peace among Kosovo and the Yugoslavian/ Serbian government.

Timeline 1989- leader of ethnic albanians of the serbian province of Kosovo issued a policy of peaceful protests against the rule of Milosevic (president of serbian republic) 1997- Milosevic (now president of Yugoslavia) agreed to demands of albanians but failed to follow through. This caused the KLA (Kosovo Liberation Army) to renew their attacks during the ceasefire. 1998- KLA’s attacks nearly considered armed uprising and serbian special police and yugoslav armed forces tried to regain control over the attacked region 1999- NATO began airstrikes against serbian military targets causing yugoslavian forces to drive out the Kosovo’s ethnic albanians to refuge in Albania, Macedonia, and Montenegro. 2008-Kosovo declared independence in February from Serbia.

Conflict Related to 5 Themes Human Environment Interaction- With the conflict happening, the land became a warzone and bombing created ditches, and agricultural lands were left and forgotten about. Location- In the Kosovo region between Albania, Serbia, Macedonia, and Montenegro. Place- agricultural with farms of saffron and peppers. Surrounded by mountain ranges and and limited water sources. Rivers located towards the west. Movement- The fighting caused more than 1 million ethnic Albanians and 500,000 more people to become displaced. Region- This conflict occurred in southeast Europe.

Hypothesis -My best solution for this conflict would have been to sign a peace treaty to share the holy land and possibly offer something to those who are driven out like a larger amount of land elsewhere for less of a fee. -Jen - My solution for this conflict would be to divide the area into 2 parts. The land going to Serbia would be north of Pristina, and the rest would belong to Albania due to the large albanian population. -Kevin
