3 1215 MAGNA CARTA The MC placed clear limits on royal power. The King had to obey the law No taxes w/o the consent of Parliament Habeas Corpus, Trial by Jury

4 NEW DYNASTY Queen Elizabeth I (Tudor dynasty) died w/o children. Cousin James I from Scotland became king in 1603 establishing the Stuart dynasty.

5 JAMES I (R.1603-1625) Parliament resented James I: Foreigner Constantly needed $$ for foreign wars, exploration, and lavish lifestyle Imposed taxes w/o consent Wanted an alliance with Catholic Spain Persecuted Puritans Divine ruler mentality

6 CHARLES I (R. 1625-1649) Ruled like James I Parliament refused to give him $$. A deal: In exchange for signing the Petition of Right (1628)--a reaffirmation of the Magna Carta, Parliament would agree to give the King $$. Why would Charles I sign it? It limits his power Once he gets the $$ he planned to ignore the law and rule w/o Parliament.

7 ENGLISH CIVIL WAR Political and religious conflicts led to civil war. --The King refused to sign the 19 Propositions --Puritans were persecuted Nobles and Catholics were for the King. They were known as the Cavaliers. Parliament and the Puritans (small farmers and merchants) were against the King. They were known as the Roundheads.

9 PARLIAMENT VICTORIOUS! Oliver Cromwell led the Roundheads to victory.
