2 Magna Carta: 1215 “This document was essentially a peace treaty between John and his barons.” “It guaranteed that the king would respect feudal rights and privilege's, uphold the freedom of the church, and maintain the nations laws” “In 1215, the barons rebelled against the king’s abuse of feudal law and custom.” “He had no choice but to give in and give their demands.” “On June 15, 1215, john met the barons and set his seal to the articles of the barons, after a minor revision it was issued as the Magna Carta.”

3 Cont. “Magna Carta was a big failure when the civil war broke out the same year.” “In 1216, King John died, but his son reissued it with new changes again in 1217.”The barons were defeated by the kings forces.” In 1225, Henry the third voluntarily reissued the Magna Carta a third time and it formally entered English statue law.”

4 Mayflower Compact: 1620 This document was signed by 41 English colonists on the ship “Mayflower” on November 11, 1620. It was the first written framework of government established in “US”. Pilgrims signed in 1620, and it was the first example of colonial plans for self-government They needed rules for this unsettled land, so they chose their leaders and made laws.

5 Petition of Right: 1628 “Parliament has some influence, but strong monarchs dominated England for centuries.” “In 1625, when Charles (I) took throne, he dissolved parliament, lodged troops in private homes, and placed some areas under martial law.” “Charles called Parliament back into session in 1628, but the representatives forced the king to sign “Petition of Right” to limit the kings power.”

6 General Fundamentals: 1636 New puritans immigrated to Massachusetts Bay. “This document was the first basic system of laws in the English colonies.” “In 1636, when the population was less than three thousand people, a committee of the General Court composed a legal code.” “It contained a set of principals which guaranteed trial by jury and stipulates that all laws are to be made with the consent of the freemen of the colony.”

7 Fundamental Order of Connecticut: 1639 “Puritans who left the Massachusetts Bay colony to colonize Connecticut, drew up America's first formal constitution.” “This document made a plan for government that gave the people the right to elect the governor, judges, and representatives to make laws.” “Other English colonies started drawing up their own charters.” “All these documents established a system of limited government and rule by law in each of colonies.”

8 English Bill of Rights: 1688 “Mary (II) & William (III) replaced James (II) for the throne. William and Mary swore an oath to govern England according to “statues in parliament agreed upon, and the laws and customs of the same.”” Parliament passed English Bills of Rights; a document that would later be vey important to the American colonies. Bill of Rights set limits on what a ruler could and could not do. It applied to American Colonies and people in England.
