Write the verbs in each sentence below. Write whether it is present or past tense. On the lines provided, Then rewrite the sentence in future tense. Example - John went to the store. Answer- went- Past Tense- Re-write- John will go to the store. 1.David runs home after school. 2. The team left the bus. 3. The sun rises the morning. 4. There are seven days in the week. 5. What do you know about rhetoric? What does the word mean? What does it make you think? Rhetoric is the art of persuasive speech. What are some common ways commercials, TV shows, and magazine articles try to persuade us?

6 LOGOS Appeals to an audience’s reason and logic.
Use of facts, statistics, definitions, historical proof, and quotes from experts.

7 PATHOS Appeals to the audience’s emotions.
Sorrow, Shame, sympathy, embarrasment, anger, excitement, and/or fear.

8 Ethos There is an overall appeal of the
speaker or writer himself or herself The speaker has impressive credentials, a noteable knowledge of the subject, and/or is a likeable person.

9 Other Rhetorical Devices
Alliteration- repetition of consonant Ex. Peter Piper picked a peck of pickled peppers. Anaphora- repetition of a word or phrase Example: “Mad world! Mad kings! Mad composition.” Antithesis- opposition or juxaposition of ideas or words in a parrallel construction. Example: “Not that I loved Caesar less, but I loved Rome more”

10 Euphemism- substitution of a more pleasant expression
Example: He passed away instead of He died Hyperbole- Extreme exageration Example: He had a ton of video games

11 Irony- words mean something opposite of what is being said.

12 Parallelism- Repetition of a key word over successive phrases or clauses.
“We will have difficult times. We’ve had difficult times in the past. And we will have difficult times in the future.” Robert F. Kennedy.

13 Personification- giving human characteristics to non-human objects.
Example: The pen danced across the author’s page. Rhetorical Questions- A question that is posed for emphasis, not requiring an answer.
