Warm Up – Writer’s Notebook “Puppy Adoption” Respond – Both of these puppies were left on your doorstep. You are not sure if your parents will agree to keep them, so you decide to write a letter to convince them. What appeals – emotional, logical, and ethical – will you use to persuade them?
WHAT IS RHETORIC? Rhetoric is the art of speaking, writing, and communicating in order to persuade effectively.
WHAT IS A RHETORICAL TECHNIQUE OR APPEAL AND HOW IS IT USED TO SELL A PRODUCT OR IDEA? A rhetorical technique is a strategy that appeals to an audience’s emotion, ethics, and/or logic.
RHETORICAL STRATEGIES ARE APPEALS USED TO CONVINCE OR PERSUADE. WHAT THE THE THREE RHETORICAL APPEALS? ETHOS – ETHICAL APPEAL LOGOS – LOGICAL APPEAL PATHOS – EMOTIONAL APPEAL
AN EMOTIONAL APPEAL IS… Emotional appeals target a person’s feelings or emotions – love, hate, fear, excitement, affection, pain, etc…
A LOGICAL APPEAL IS… LOGICAL APPEALS ARE BASED ON FACTS, STATISTICS, PERSONAL ANECDOTES (A SHORT PERSONAL EXPERIENCE USED TO MAKE A POINT). THEY APPEAL TO LOGIC AND REASON. PERSUASIVE WRITING MUST HAVE THIS APPEAL TO BE EFFECTIVE.
AN ETHICAL APPEAL IS… ETHICAL APPEALS ARE BASED ON A PERSON’S SENSE OF RIGHT AND WRONG. They appeal to a person’s moral and values. Include character traits such as honesty, integrity, trust, etc…
WHAT IS A “CALL TO ACTION”? A message that attempts to persuade a person to perform a desired action, or to do something. Examples: “Act Now” “please consider supporting…” “Just do it!”
