9 What is lightweight construction?
Traditional Masonry Construction Methods Clay masonry veneer Cavity clay masonry Fibre cement cladding with timber frame External masonry Framing Sarking Plasterboard External masonry Internal masonry Fibre cement cladding Framing Sarking Plasterboard or render Plasterboard It’s typically Based on an elevated floor supported by piers or stumps (but can also be a concrete slab on the ground). Incorporates lightweight cladding materials such as fibre cement, timber, foam and aluminium products. Uses a timber or steel frame. A variation on typical lightweight construction may also include a home that‟s built on a concrete slab that incorporates lightweight walls and a lightweight roof.

11 1. Lower embodied energy This is the energy consumed by all of the processes associated with the production of a product. It can be the equivalent of many years of operational energy. Generally lightweight construction uses less embodied energy than traditional construction methods. Lower embodied energy means less fossil fuel is burned. This reduces greenhouse gasses emitted into our environment, which is a big plus. Did you know that a timber-framed and elevated floor can have up to ½ the embodied energy of a concrete slab?

12 2. Minimal impact on the site
It reduces the need for excavation, cut and fill. It helps retain trees and other vegetation. It limits the effect of storm-water flow through a site.

13 3. Permits airflow beneath the floor
Helps reduce rising damp. Gives easy access to services. Increases visibility for pest inspection.

14 4. Larger internal footprint
It can generate a greater floor area within the house, because walls can be thinner than traditional construction methods. Did you know that this can add up to 8 square metres on an average 12x15 metre single storey house?

15 5. Greater design flexibility
The house can be designed to suit the levels of the block and has greater design flexibility in being able to have split levels. Did you know that this is a big advantage when the builder is working with a sloping site?

16 6. Cost efficient – less trades
Using our products in lightweight construction: Can significantly reduce scaffolding costs and the need for structural beams, that are required for traditional double storey construction. Reduces the number of tradespeople involved to two – a carpenter and painter. Did you know that many builders strive to reduce their number of trades on site to help improve building efficiency?

17 7. Speed – less trades Using our products in lightweight construction makes the building process simpler and faster than traditional construction that needs bricklayers, cleaners, renderers and painters.

19 What are they made from? Cellulous fibre. Portland cement.
Ground sand*. Additives as required for specific product properties. Water. *Sand is a source of respirable silica. It‟s found in many common building products including concrete, bricks, grout and ceramic tiles. Some international authorities consider respirable silica to be a cause of cancer, and breathing excessive amounts can also cause a potentially fatal lung disease. We will be telling you about this and how to safely handle, cut and install our products in our module „Working with fibre cement‟. In the meantime, you can find information about this at or by talking to your James Hardie Representative.

20 Embodied energy Our products are low in embodied energy relative to many other building materials like masonry and concrete. Embodied energy is the energy consumed by all of the process associated with the production of a product. It can be the equivalent of many years of operational energy. Generally lightweight construction uses less embodied energy than traditional construction methods. Lower embodied energy means less fossil fuel is burned. This reduces greenhouse gasses emitted into our environment, which is a big plus. Did you know: A timber framed / brick veneer wall has about 2½ times the embodied energy of a time framed / fibre cement weatherboard wall? A double brick wall has almost 4 times more embodied energy?

21 The impact of using our products over the life of a building
Our products are very durable and low maintenance which helps create building low in lifetime energy consumption. When installed and maintained correctly and to the extent set out in James Hardie‟s published literature current at the time of installation they: Are resistant to: Resist shrinking, swelling and cracking to hold paint longer than wood.

Our products are low in volatile organic compounds (VOCs). ► VOC‟s are toxic gases, sometimes called emissions or odours and come from numerous household products. They escape into the air and contribute to air pollution outdoors and inside our homes. Did you know: The energy efficiency of a house is measured in numbers of stars, except in NSW which is rated by BASIX? As of May 2010, all new homes in QLD and the ACT need to have a 6 star rating? Did you know: That the CSIRO estimates that occupants of new homes may be exposed to many times the maximum allowable limits of some indoor air pollutants like VOCs? They can cause eye, nose and throat irritation, headache, nausea, dizziness, asthma and skin problems?

A strong, pre-primed base sheet that is finished on site with a specialist texture coat system, which includes joint reinforcement. It can significantly reduce the cost of scaffolding and structural beams compared to rendered masonry. A strong base sheet with a shiplap vertical joint - eliminates the need for a vertical set and control joint Finished on site with a roller- applied textured paint finish - eliminates the need for specialised applicators. A flat sheet that has vertical V- shaped grooves carved into its face. Sheet edges are finished with a half groove to conceal butt jointing and make it fast and easy to install. Can be used as an internal wall lining and on eaves and soffits.

A pre-sanded and pre-sealed sheet with square edges for butt joints . Can also be used in exposed beam ceilings and soffits. Can also be used as internal bracing. Its square edges with a wide range of accessories make it easy and fast to install.

Specifically designed for use behind our external cladding on steel frames to reduce thermal bridging Excellent compression resistance and great strength. Enhances thermal performance, boosts wall performance, and helps reduce façade waviness. Non-absorbent, mould and termite resistant. 43mm wide x 2,750mm long to suit common wall frame sizes. Self adhesive backing tape for fast and easy installation and cuts easily with a Stanley knife.

48 What is Scyon™? The brainchild of James Hardie‟s research and development team, Scyon™ : Was pioneered by James Hardie over 8 years ago. Was the FIRST advanced, lightweight cement composite building material with heavy duty performance. It‟s fundamentally different from James Hardie® original fibre cement, and even today, remains unique to the industry.

Uses CLD™ – Ceramic Low Density micro-particle technology - combined with a specially modified manufacturing process technology. Large sheet sizes and the shiplap joint enable fast installation. Pre-primed for fast paint application.

Full floor waterproofing is not needed outside an enclosed shower area.
