Introduction of the Program Re-evaluation of the Program Piloting of the revised Program 2012 Club Rebuilding added The CGL was originally developed in Its requirements were to fulfil six objectives, to improve: Retention of new club members Orientation of new club officers and members The assimilation of the new club membership into the Lions structure The relationship between the sponsoring club and the new club The support system of advisors over a longer time The knowledge level of the guiding Lion RE-evaluation Development Team Met over a series of teleconferences over a four month period to develop the program. In addition to surveys, we looked at our own regional best practices to improve the course. Objective One: Keep same time frame. Objective Two: Redesign guide to be more focused on club development with basic and practical strategies. Objective Three: Less focus on manuals, more focus on new on-line training and incorporate new materials. Objective Four: Integrate a Club Officer Mentoring system to support each new club officer position. Objective Five: Focus on empowering club members. Objective Six: Improve distribution – use web more fully. Objective Seven: Provide the Guiding Lion with the data needed to track club development.

MOST IMPORTANT SKILL OF A GUIDING LION! The Certified Guiding Lion may be the single most important factor to the success of a new club. But to be successful, the Guiding Lion must commit the time to conduct training, attend meetings and support the development of club officers (and potential club officers).

11 Course Workbook So, how do we get through more information in the same four-hour course? Pre-Assignment! As we mentioned, this new course utilizes on-line courses, a mentor team and far more resources so you might be asking yourself……. This is something that we have been doing in the UK for years, and it really makes the discussion time and the course time much more effective!

Club Officer Mentor Team (10 minutes) Resource: Club Officer Mentor Checklists Introduce new club officers to their Club Officer Mentors Each officer should be assigned a mentor who is currently fulfilling the same officer role The Mentor should be experienced, available and able to communicate/train the new officer effectively Provide each pair a copy of their respective checklist Ask them to meet with their mentor to go through the checklist prior to the next training session I think that mentoring is one of the key facets of the programme, a chance to share knowledge and experience in a safe environment, to develop the new Club Officer.

The Club Officer Manual can help new officers plan their term and provides general information on the clubs daily operations with information such as: Setting goals Managing club activities through the year Record keeping Transitioning to the next team Job specific information can be found in the Leadership Resource Center under training materials and then Club Officer Orientation. Refer them to the site. Their mentor should be covering the details specific to their position with them on an on-going basis.

38 Initiating Meaningful Projects (30 minutes) Resource: Making it Happen
Meaningful Projects are key to the health and sustainability of new clubs. “Making It Happen” guides the new club members through four key steps: Identify potential projects Develop a task force (and involve interested members) Conduct research (and identify the members you need) Determine action steps needed to implement the plan

44 Hosting Productive and Meaningful Meetings Resource: Focus on Meetings and Club Program Meeting Ideas “Focus on Meetings” and the “Club Program Meeting Idea” flyer include information on how to host a successful meeting. “Meeting Management”, an on-line course in the Leadership Development section of the LCI web site. Discuss how to make the meetings positive, effective and ways to increase attendance. Usually, the president is in charge of meeting management and the membership chair is in charge of increasing attendance. The first few club meetings are critical. If meetings are not productive, members will lose interest quickly.

45 Increasing Meeting Attendance
If meeting attendance is not increasing, discuss ways to boost meetings attendance. The list in the workbook includes. Make sure the meeting date, time and location meets your members and your potential member’s needs  Send invitations to current and potential members noting the activities that will take place  Make personal calls to invite current and potential members to the meetings who may need additional encouragement. Tell them how their support is needed by the club and by the community.   Invite an interesting and relevant speaker to each general meeting to give members and potential members a reason to attend.  Make sure each member who attends the meeting is involved in a project that is meaningful to them. Having solid attendance is the sign of a strong club, remember that these new members don’t have a through understanding of Lions so their commitment may not be strong. To counter this, the club should continue to promote attendance.

49 Reports Club Health Assessment – measures the progress of the club in the area of membership gain/loss, reporting, payment of dues and balances and donations made to LCIF Quarterly Report – The report completed by the Guiding Lion and given to the District Team and LCI to report the progress made by the club. As a Certified Guiding Lion, once you are assigned to a club, you will receive regular updates on the club’s progress.

Club Officer Training Checklist – to ensure the information has been shared and effectively communicated to the new club officers Transition to Independence – A checklist to gauge the club’s progress as the club becomes more self reliant. 58 Implementing CGLP in Club Rebuilding – some considerations
For District Governors: Understand the Club in question, the history, personalities in the Club/Zone Is CGL program the most appropriate intervention? Understand the personality, skills and background of the CGLs – look for best fit For District Governors read DGT team, GMT and GLT Chairmen . Questions to consider are what has already been done to help the Club rebuild? why wasn’t it successful? Was this down to a specific reason? Consider the personalities involved, past council chairman, PDGs, what are their motives, are they supportive? Other members, would they welcome an outsider coming in? What is the region/zone chairman’s view, are they supportive? What is the view of other Clubs in the locality, are they supportive? Having considered these fact is CGLP the most appropriate invention at this time or could something still be done internally. Look at the CGLs available. What would the best fit be. Diplomatic skills, ability to build rapport, likely to command respect from the club, likely to be seen as a source of support rather than an interference. Availability of CGLs, what else are they already doing?

59 Implementing CGLP in Club Rebuilding – some considerations
For the Certified Guiding Lion: Understand the Club, the history, personalities in the Club/Zone. Am I the best CGL to help? Who are the key stakeholders in the Club/Zone? What advance discussions need to take place? Once appointed do your research thoroughly, don’t just charge in. Find out what efforts have been made already to rebuild the Club, what were the successes and failures? Why was this? Are you likely to fit well into the situation? What skills will need to have? Find out who the key stakeholders are, the members, what is their background in Lions, the Region/Zone chairperson are they active? Who do you need to talk to? And when? What order? How should the conversation take place?

For the Certified Guiding Lion (contd): When it the best time to attend, normal meeting or special meeting? Listen and reflect! Don’t come up with instant solutions Allow the Club to suggest ways Involve key stakeholders at all times Consider when to go live. When will have the best effect for the Club? Take your time. Say you have just come to listen. Don’t put yourself under pressure to come up with solutions immediately. Good consultants survey the whole situation then reflect, the propose options. The Club may well have ideas themselves, evaluate the ideas. Absolutely crucial to involve key stakeholders, how are they feeling, what ideas are they having, are they supportive

For the Certified Guiding Lion (contd): Talk to other CGLs who might have been in a similar situation Keep the District Governor advised Recognize success If its your first involvement as a CGL in a club Rebuilding programme, talk to other CGLs, how have they handled situations, what advice can they give. Ensure the DG is in the loop at all times. Make them aware of the successes and challenges. Is anything likely to blow up into an incident? What good practice can be shared with other Clubs? When the Club is healthy again celebrate the success!!

The location should offer the following: 1 Easily accessible 2 Within budget – Free is good! 3 Can accommodate your anticipated attendance 4 Will need to have the location secured so invitations can go out in a timely manner

1 Round tables or setup conducive for small group discussion. 2 Have an extra table for materials. 3 Make sure everyone can see the screen. 4 Flip Chart (with markers) for each table.

Participants to print materials from LCI website Preliminary assignment work to have been completed before the workshop Extra (spare) CGL kits to be available (1 extra per 5 attendees) Other materials such as local newsletters If the participants did the preliminary assignment, then they should have downloaded and printed out the materials. However, it is a good idea to have extra kits in case they forget to bring them. Perhaps one kit for every 5 people. Material on local activities such as district newsletters and other local materials that would be of interest to new club members.
