2  Welcome / Announcements – (5 minutes)  Attendance/– (5 minutes)  Discuss syllabus and daily classroom procedures – (40 minutes)  Questions and Concerns – (5 minutes)

3  The course will provide opportunities for students with an interest in teaching to develop skills, strategies, and techniques used for instruction at various grade levels.  Instruction addresses the principles and procedures for promoting the physical, emotional, social, and intellectual development of children, adolescents and developmentally appropriate practices in educational settings.  Students will gain experience in classrooms with certified teachers as part of their course work. Other components include the development of a four-year post-secondary plan, salaries and benefits of a teacher, job security, and future projections of the job market.

4  There are over 3.7 million teachers in the United States.  By 2018, it is expected that another 500,000 teachers will be needed in the workforce.  In Kentucky, there is a shortage in the following areas: Career and Technical EducationExceptional Children (Emotional-Behavior Disorder, Functional Mental Disorder, Hearing Impaired, Learning Behavior Disorder, Visually Impaired) English (Middle School, Secondary)Mathematics (Middle School, Secondary) English as a Second LanguageScience (Biology, Chemistry, Earth Science, General Science, Middle School, Secondary Level, Physics)

5  Pencil / Ink Pen needed every day  1 Subject Notebook  This will serve as your Interactive Notebook and should ONLY be used for this class.  Folder (Provided for you)  For graded tests and bell ringers.

6  Develop a lesson plan using strategies/methods taught in class.  Teach a lesson using the lesson plan developed by the student.  Compile the characteristics of an effective teacher.  Trace through time the history of American education.  Describe the requirements to become a teacher.  Identify the qualities of teacher professionalism and leadership.  Explore diversity and its implications in the classroom, including diverse teaching methods.  Observe, interact and reflect on teaching and learning in classrooms.  Describe how education systems are organized.  Define curriculum and identify the forces that influence its development.  Analyze different methods used to assess student learning.  Identify issues and challenges in education today such as No Child Left Behind, changing family patterns, cultures of schools, etc.  Identify career opportunities for educators.  Develop a four-year post-secondary plan.

7 1. Arrive to class with all personal needs taken care of and in your seat before the tardy bell rings (You are only allowed 2 hall passes during the trimester). If it is an emergency and you need to use a 3 rd pass, you will be deducted 1 point from your final grade. 2. Come to class prepared to learn (Pencils sharpened, materials in hand, and homework finished). 3. Respect all property in the class (School property, your property, and other people’s property). 4. Respect all ideas given in class and do not criticize anyone’s thoughts or ideas.

8 ALL SCHOOL RULES APPLY IN THIS CLASSROOM.  No Cell phones, I-Pods, Earphones, etc. ▪ Cell Phones may be used ON OCCASION, with teacher permission, if you have a telecommunications waiver completed from the front office. ▪ If you are texting, on social media, or surfing the web your phone will be confiscated and turned in to the front office.  Dress code must be followed EVERY SINGLE DAY.

9  At the sound of the FIRST bell that signifies the start of class, the door will be shut. At that point in time, you will need to report to sign-in late to school.  You will remain in Tardy Hall for the remainder of the period. It is your responsibility to come to me AFTER or BEFORE school and collect the work that you missed.  If you are tardy to 1 st period, you must sign in at the front office and then report to the small cafeteria.  You will also have 3 employability points deducted for each tardy.

10  We begin EACH day with a bell ringer that is located on the Smart Board using PowerPoint.  You are responsible for completing EVERY bell ringer.  Each bell ringer will be worth 5 points, for a total of 25 points each week.  The bell ringers will serve as a review of content, thought-provoker, or reading and reflection.  Each day a random student will be asked to answer the bell ringer on the Smart Board.  These are turned in EVERY Friday for a total of 25 points.

11  I dismiss you everyday – once we have SUMMARIZED the day’s activities.  Remain in your seat until the dismissal bell rings. If everyone is not in a seat, we WILL NOT dismiss.  Your work area must be CLEAN and in order before we dismiss. PLEASE REFRAIN FROM TALKING WHILE I AM SPEAKING. Respect is the most important aspect to my classroom procedures. If you respect me, my classroom, and your classmates – you will receive respect in return.

12  Grades will be based upon:  Employability Points (Classroom Participation) – 15% ▪ 25 Points a week, 300 Points a trimester  Classroom Notes – 25% ▪ Interactive Notebooks – will be collected every 3 weeks  Daily Activities – 45% ▪ Varies by activity, may include vocabulary quizzes, exit slips, Edmodo activities, etc; typically 150 points a week  Projects / Presentations / Tests – 20% ▪ Chapter Tests are typically 75 – 100 points per chapter. ▪ Projects and presentations will vary in points per activity.

13  Employability Skills estimates 15% (300 points) of your final grade during this class. You start out with 25 points per week and the number beside each of the following offenses subtracts from your 25 points throughout the week. Points will be deducted on my clipboard and recorded in Infinite Campus.

15  Your Interactive Notebook will be collected EVERY 3 weeks for a grade.  Interactive notebooks are typically worth 80 – 120 points every 3 weeks.

16  Every single day you will be assessed and receive a grade for some activity throughout the day. These points may range from 20 to 80 points depending upon the activity.  Bell Ringers  Each day you will complete a bell ringer for 5 daily points. These will be collected at the end of each week for a weekly grade.

17  We will typically have some form of project / presentation that corresponds with each chapter and will be turned in separately (not in your notebook).  These ranges from 50 – 115 points depending on complexity.  After each Chapter and/or Unit you will complete a summative assessment either in the form of a test or project to test your understanding. These assessments may range from 75 – 100 points.

18  You will turn in ALL work in the silver crates located on the bookshelf. Please turn in your work in the appropriate crate. I will not accept any work turned directly into me – it has to go in the crate.  I will not provide students will additional copies of lost assignments. You must visit my classroom website to obtain any additional copies of assignments.  When you turn in an assignment, you must include your designated number in the TOP RIGHT-HAND CORNER! Any assignment submitted without your designated # will result in a deduction of 5% points

19  DO NOT LOG-IN to the computers unless permission is given.  When computer access is granted, you must log-in with your PERSONAL USERNAME and PASSWORD.  Computer backgrounds and settings WILL NOT be changed.

22  Attendance Keeper (100 points) –  Student will record attendance on clipboard daily. Student may not miss more than 3 days before being removed from this position.  Paper Passer Outer (100 points) –  Student is responsible for handing back papers to students at the end of the period each day. Student may not miss more than 3 days before being removed from this position.  Classroom Manager (100 points) –  Student is responsible for assisting students that were absent the previous day retrieving their work from the classroom website.  Bell Ringer Collector (50 points) -  Student is responsible for collecting bell ringers from everyone each Friday and place in the tray. Student may not miss more than 1 Friday before being removed from this position.  Grade Recorder (50 points) –  Student is responsible for recording grades as needed from classmates on the clipboard. Student may not miss more than 5 days before being removed from this position.

23  What if the fire alarm sounds while in class?  We will meet as a class directly outside by the light pole, so attendance can be taken.  What if the tornado alarm sounds while in class?  We will meet as a class in the girl’s PE locker room and take cover.  What if the earthquake alarm sounds while in class?  We will crawl under our desk and cover our heads!

24  What if the intruder alarm sounds while in class?  We will turn out all lights and gather at the front of the room and remain silent until safety has been confirmed.  What if you need to discuss a grade or personal issue with Ms. Tracy?  All grades and personal issues need to be discussed outside of class. Please set up an appointment either before or after school to discuss any matters. However, feel free to email me at any time to discuss any questions or concerns you might have.
