Now that we know what’s here, let’s find out how we got here!  Explorers  Pilgrims  Land Use  Why people move  Modify environment  Natural Resources

Explorers  Leif Erikson  Viking who is first to reach North America around 1000 AD  Christopher Columbus  Columbus sailed the ocean blue in 1492.  He was looking for a shorter route to Asia.  Columbus saw the Native Americans and called them Indians because he thought that he landed in India.

 Hernando de Soto  Landed in Florida and led an expedition. He was the first to see the Mississippi River. He died in Louisiana and was buried in the Mississippi River

Where did all the explorers come from?  Spain  France  England

Why did they explore?  They were looking for new places to sell their goods.  They were looking for raw materials: wood, gold, furs.  They were curious.  Ships, maps, compasses, and other explorer tools were improving, so they could explore more!

Who settled here?  Before the Pilgrims, a colony was set up in Virginia.  Jamestown  They were looking for GOLD!!!  They didn’t find it, and nearly all the settlers died.  England sent more settlers and provisions (food, clothing).  They started to grow tobacco and the colony was a success.

Now to the Pilgrims  The Pilgrims arrived in Massachusetts in 1620.  They were Puritans who wanted to practice their religion freely.  The Native Americans showed them how to survive the winters.  HAPPY THANKSGIVING

(Remember they didn’t have cars!)  Food Supply They needed to eat (rich farmland and places to hunt).  Environment They didn’t want to live in the desert or on top of a mountain!

People use land for many different reasons.  Farming  Mining  Drilling for oil/gas  Fishing

Farming  In an area with rich soil, people may choose to farm the land.
