3 2/3 of the 17.5 million people that suffer from depression do not seek help! 80% of people that seek treatment significantly improve their lives Women experience depression about twice as often as men 15% of depressed people will commit suicide Depression is a medical illness…. This illness can be treated with medications

4 Depression is a psychiatric disorder characterized by a persuasive low mood, Loss of interest in usual activities and diminished ability to experience pleasure True depression or “Clinical depression” is not the same as a depressed mood. Clinical depression affects every aspect of a persons life, making them unable To enjoy anything that they do. Depression can come on in an instant, take on a gradual role, be a once in A lifetime experience, or be reoccurring. Depression can last a month or even years Doctors say that any prolonged “depressed” mood That lasts more than two week’s is clinical

6 The first step is to go get help, remember 2/3 or individuals with depression never Seek help! Psychological treatment or psychotherapy assists the depressed individual in a few Ways. Step 1 Supportive counseling helps ease the pain of depression and addresses The feelings of hopelessness that go along with depression Step 2 Cognitive Therapy helps a depressed person realize which life problems are Critical and which are minor. They also help the individual set realistic goals. Step 3 Problem solving therapy helps change the areas of a persons life that Is creating stress… contributes to their depression. Length of treatment will vary Depending on the patient…. On average it will take 8 – 10 Sessions to feel some relief, 20 – 30 sessions for significant improvements

7 Unless the depression is severe, medication is a option not a necessity There are 4 main types of anti-depressants that are prescribed to treat depression MAOIsBad side effects, only prescribed when no other meds have worked TCAs Better than MAOIs but harmful in large doses, rarely prescribed SSRIsVery widely prescribed, works by increasing the amount of serotonin in the body, therefore improving mood SNRIsAlso widely used, just like SSRI but also effect the amount of nor epinephrine in a persons system Depression can be treated by Psychotherapy Medications Psychotherapy and Medications Lets listen to Mayo http://www.mayoclinic.com/health/antidepressants/MM00660

8 Depression is called Unipolar disorder. The only emotion that they Feel is sadness. Bi-Polar disorder is also known as manic disorder. In Bi-Polar disorder the Individual will experience very high feelings of happiness, quickly replaced By very low swing of sadness. 11 More than 32,000 people kill themselves each year. That is about 89 suicides per day, or 1 suicide every 16 minutes Males commit suicide nearly 4 times as much as females, they account For about 78% of all U.S suicides Women attempt suicide about 2 or 3 times more often than men Firearms are the most commonly used methods of suicide for men Poisoning is the most commonly used method for women For teenagers there is 1 successful suicide for every 150 attempts

12 The act of intentionally ending ones own life. Can occur due to depression, substance abuse, shame, avoiding pain, financial difficulties, or other undesirable fates. Assisted suicide is helping another who is unable to take their own life, this Is not considered a true suicide. Talking about death or suicide Recent loss or break in a relationship Drastic change in personality or behavior Change in eating and sleeping habits Low self esteem Depression No hope for the future Other things to watch for- Suicidal impulses, statements, plans; giving away favorite things; previous suicide attempts, substance abuse, making out wills, arranging for the care of pets, extravagant spending, agitation, hyperactivity, restlessness or lethargy.

It is NOT your job to take the role of a public health care provider, if a person Is thinking about suicide they need professional help! Gather as much information as you can (how they are going to do it, when they will do it?) If you believe that the suicide attempt is immanent DO NOT LEAVE THEM. Call 911 right away, if need be take the person to the emergency room

14 If the suicide is not immanent, help out and follow through on your promise To help your friend. Ways you can help include: Finding a qualified doctor or mental health provider Taking him or her to appointments Sorting through health insurance policies or benefit information 1-800-SUICIDE1-800-273-TALK Suicide is never the answer. If you are thinking of committing suicide PLEASE talk to someone… a friend, parent, professional, or teacher
