2. Teddy Roosevelt and the World Mediates a settlement to end the Russo- Japanese War. Worked out a treaty to build the Panama Canal- canal cutting across Central America.

3. Teddy Roosevelt and the World Roosevelt Corollary- (1904)Added this to the Monroe Doctrine. Monroe Doctrine demanded that European countries stay out of affairs of Latin American Nations. The Roosevelt Corollary said that the U.S. would now use force to protect its economic interests in Latin America (“Speak softly and carry a big stick”) Dollar Diplomacy- Policy of using the U.S. government to guarantee loans made to foreign countries by American business people. This policy was often used to justify keeping European powers out of the Caribbean.

4. Woodrow Wilson’s Missionary Diplomacy According to Wilson’s “missionary diplomacy,” the U.S. had a moral responsibility to deny recognition to any Latin American government it viewed as oppressive, undemocratic, or hostile to U.S. interest. This policy pressured nations to establish democratic governments. Led to Mexican Revolution. Refused to recognize the new Mexican government that General Victoriano Huerta had formed. Recognized the government set up by nationalist leader Venustiano Carranza.

5. Woodrow Wilson’s Missionary Diplomacy Pancho Villa and Emiliano Zapata- Mexican rebels who opposed Carranza’s government. Attacked Americans after Wilson recognized Carranza’s government. John J. Pershing- Was ordered by Wilson to take an expeditionary force of 15,000 soldiers into Mexico to capture Villa dead or alive.
