2 MLA Citation of Novel Author last name, author first name. Novel Title. City: Publishing Company, year. Print. Chapters: list the number that the book has Pages: list the number that the book has

3 Characters Name and describe the main characters; label protagonist & antagonist. DESCRIBE – Who they are, what they look like, what they do Protagonist – main good guy Antagonist – main bad guy

4 Narration Narrator – Who is telling the story? A character in the novel OR someone outside Point of view: 1 st Person – A character in the novel 3 rd Person limited – Someone outside who cannot read the characters thoughts 3 rd Person omniscient – Someone outside who can read the characters thoughts

5 Setting – time AND place the story happens Tone – the author’s attitude towards the subject Examples: -serious --humorous --frightening --happy -- formal --informal

6 Conflict Official definition: the inherent incompatibility of two objects in a work of literature 4 main types: 1.Person vs. Person 2.Person vs. Self 3.Person vs. Society 4.Person vs. Nature For your novel guides, pick one and describe it!

7 Plot: the events that take place In your guides, this should be done in a paragraph form of no less than 5 sentences! Themes: main idea of the story. It’s sort of like a moral. Symbol: Objects that have meaning beyond themselves. Are mockingbirds just animals in TKAM?

8 Literary Elements The way that the author uses language to convey meaning. Some examples: dialogue, description, simile, metaphor, irony For your novel guide, select two by giving an example and DESCRIBE their use
