* They are well-established and responsible for almost all of the energy used in Canada * Examples: * Oil * Natural Gas * Coal * Hydro-electricity * Nuclear-electricity

* Growing … will hopefully play a bigger role in Canada`s energy use in the future!!! * Alternative energy sources tend to be renewable, whereas most conventional energy sources are non-renewable * Examples: * Solar * Wind * Biomass * Geothermal

CONVENTIONAL (99%)ALTERNATIVE (1%) THERMAL - OIL - COAL - NATURAL GAS HYDRO-ELECTRICITY NUCLEAR WIND SOLAR BIOMASS GEOTHERMAL TIDAL

* Northern climate = cold much of the year * Small population spread out over huge land mass = high energy consumption for transportation * Advanced industrial economy uses lots of energy * Energy is cheap, so we waste it (not so good reason)

Hydro-Electric Power Thermal-Electric Power Nuclear-Electric Power Source of Power Rivers with significant changes in elevation Burning coal, oil, gas, wood or garbage to make steam Radioactive breakdown of uranium atoms Advantages -cheap to operate -no air pollution -renewable -reservoir creation -near markets -least expensive to build of three options -near markets -uranium available in Canada -no air pollution -low operating costs Disadvantages -costly to build -site far from market -long transmission lines required -fuel is expensive -non-renewable resources used -gases contribute to acid precipitation -high construction costs -long term costs high to decommisssion -potentially harmful radioactive waste disposal necessary

a) Do you think that you use more energy than you really need? Ex. I blowdry and straighten my hair; I use my computer too much; I leave the TV on sometimes when I leave the room; I take long showers; I`m using this LCD projector to show my PowerPoint (unnecessary); I leave lights on; I`m not carpooling this semester, etc.

How could you reduce your energy use without significantly changing the way you live? b) How could you reduce your energy use without significantly changing the way you live? Ex. I could let my hair go curly; I could put a limit on the amount of time I use the computer; I could turn the TV and lights off everytime I leave the room; I could put a timer on for my shower; I could use the blackboard; I should carpool next semester!!!!, etc.
