New England MiddleSouth Social/cultural -Based on conservative religion -Community prospers through doing God’s will -Exclusive (elect vs. damned) -Stable family life -Quality education for religion (96% literacy rate) -Religious tolerance and democracy -The reformed and the outcast -Great ethnic diversity -Best relations with Native Americans -People isolated in rural areas -Strict class system -Focus on economy rather than education (50% literacy rate) -Fear of slave rebellion -Unstable family life

NewEnglandMiddleSouth Economic -Diverse (lumber, shipbuilding, rum distilling, etc.) -Clergy, physicians, lawyers, merchants -”Cottage industries” -Many small farms but limited by soil/climate -Medium sized farms and plantations - “Bread colonies” - “Beaver colonies” - Some industry and commerce -Cash crops (tobacco, rice, indigo) -Large plantations dominant over small farms -Reliance on a large labor force

New England MiddleSouth Religion-Congregati-onanalists,Puritans,Presbyterians -Dominates ALL aspects of life -Great Awakening -Mixed religions due to a general sense of religious toleration -Openness to rejected people -Quakers -Heavily Anglican (state sponsored church) -Didn’t play as large of a role because people were more spread out
