2 Welcome to 3rd Grade! The following pages give you some information about what to expect in 3rd grade.

3 When do I have….. Phy. Ed - Tues. 2:20 - 3:00 and Thurs. 10:00 -10:40 Music - Mon. 12:45 - 1:30 and Wed. 10:00 - 10:40 Library - Mon. 10:00 - 10:40 Art - Fri. 1:30 - 2:10 Computers - Thurs. 10:50 - 11:20

4 Subjects and Expectations Room 107

5 Math Homework is given almost every night except Friday Assignments are usually 10 - 15 minutes long depending on the student Usually the assignment is to complete an assignment already started in class

6 Topics covered in math: Place value Graphing Addition and subtraction to 4 digits Money and time Multiplication and division Geometry and measurement

7 Spelling Contracts for spelling units are given at the beginning of each week Students are expected to study at least 2 nights each week for the test on Friday Contracts need to be returned on Fridays with at least one signature of the adult the student studied with Tests have 14 regular words and 6 challenge words (for extra credit)

8 Religion Most religion assignments are done at school, but discussion of assignments can be prompted at home as well. Religion textbook and classroom bibles are used throughout the year (students can bring their own bibles to school if they’d like). Participation in school liturgies is encouraged, and family members are welcome to join in the celebration as they are able.

9 Science/Social Studies Students will have a notebook for Science notes. A variety of topics will be covered in both subjects. Some assignments will be done in class. Others will be finished at home.

10 Students will change classes for Science/ Social Studies!!! Social Studies is in Room 107. Science is in Room 106.

11 Study guides and tests for Science/Social Studies A review day will be given before each test Test dates will be written in the assignment notebooks or on the website Text books can be taken home to help study for the tests.

12 Reading - Book Log All third grade students are required to read at least 15 minutes each day at home. Minutes are recorded in the book log form located in each student’s assignment notebook. Students: Please fill out the log. Parents: Please initial each log. This is part of each student’s reading grade.

13 Reading and Language Arts Both reading and language will include the use of textbooks. Students will have a practice book in reading. Writing assignments will be assigned in both classes throughout the year (poetry, paragraph writing, poems, and a research report).

14 Writing Reminders Be aware of spelling, punctuation, capitalization, and indenting of paragraphs. Proofreading is essential before handing work in.

15 Using Cursive!!! Cursive is encouraged from second quarter on. Students who feel ready can use cursive anytime. More assignments will be required in cursive as the year progresses.
