My magazine proposal

Genre The genre that i decided on for my magazine is rap as it is a genre of music of which i have a passion for and have done for a long period of time; I believe that its a underground scene and would be good to promote even though it will be a huge task to create some good images, ideas etc to fit in with the theme of the magazine. However there is a lot of music out there and also a large opportunity for research. People often listen to the top of the pops rap music and don’t appreciate the quality of 90’s rap music and the new underground theme.

Flatlin e I decided on the name flatline for my magazine as i decided the word connotes the long rap history of violence and also flat line could mean hardy and blunt lyrics etc... I thought of the name as its a word that if frequently used by the rapper Nas. The lyrics in rap are considerably more vital than other music where often the use of instruments is the key asset of the music, rap music allows the type of music to vary the way the music is viewed and relies on a rappers lyrical talent. The magazine name is very important and sets the tone of the magazine, the magazine will also contain information about the raps history etc... I have thought of some other names for my magazine such as The Era which promotes the old school times.

Target audience The target audience for my magazine is really open and can fall into men and women and young teenagers right up to middle aged people who grew up within the rap/hip-hop movement. My primary audience are 14-29 years old who have started to recently find the rap music as something they enjoy but to give them a insight to the past and present of the music. My secondary audience will be people who are 30-45 this age group grew up listening to rap music and have grown up listening to the new generations of rap music, this will allow them to have a insight to the new world of rap music and the ‘evolving era’. This will give them a opportunity for them to find out the new music of rap and not just the mainstream music that is regularly on the radio and being discussed. However my primary target audience are students and therefore the magazine needs to have something special as they are not going to spend excessive amounts of money on media related products. 5 Front cover ideas I want the image for the cover to be of a retro theme however I want the editing to be simplistic however effective and catchy to the eye but not to much going on with the title and the edits keeping a simple colour theme of the front cover will be vital for the effect possibly a picture from a polaroid to endorse a retro theme or a fisheye lense to help promote the street feel of the image. I will try to use photoshop to create a retro theme instead of the usual modern day highly enhanced photograph to make the magazine appear modern. Location I plan to use the radio studio at sheldon school as a scene as it’s readily available also i plan some pictures to use the streets at the location showing the ‘nitty gritty’ nature of rap music showing some graffiti and industry rather than the glamour of rap that has been presented by the mainstream artists who don’t show their routes of the music.

Reader profile The reader is a low earning typically group E student however don’t become confused this is merely a stereotype, more than 30% of the readers during a recent questionnaire have been identified as group B teachers and people who are highly qualified with high levels of intelligence. Typically our reader spends very little on the media industry as they don’t have a large disposable income therefore the magazine is often one of very few media items that they buy per month. These people don’t follow the crowd they are part of a small and upcoming movement someone who has a wide variety of music but knows large quantities of information on a certain type of music. The magazine for the reader is like a learning guide, teaching them the ongoings of the up and coming music and the golden oldies from the era. They may listen to the incredibly iconic features of the old school rap they may want to find the unreleased old school music that people have never discovered.

USP The magazine will have many different parts that other magazines lack to for fill the average magazine release that has put shame on the name of the magazine world.Flatline will have many USP’s the first selling point will be the fact that the magazine will contain downloadable links, promotional vouchers etc... The magazine won’t be the same the whole idea of the magazine is to give a variation on the normal magazine which highlights the mainstream music that everyone knows about, the magazine will also vary from music and merge onto fashion and the various subcultures behind rap music for instance graffiti, art and fashion. The magazine will certainly kill 2 birds with 1 stone.

Tagline The tagline for my magazine is undecided however i have a few ideas that I have not finalised and are still open to options one of the ideas was ‘ bring back music from the dead’ as it ties in with the name flatline or another tagline idea could be ‘keeping the heart from sleepin’ The tag lines that i decide to use are very important because it is the immediate thing after the title that the reader views. The tagline also is the words that sum up the magazine on the front cover. “Evolving the era”

Double page spread The magazine double page spread for my magazine i have decided to do an article on the evolvement of rap and how the music is changing over the years all influenced by the various artists that emerge within the scene, rap music also has various sub-genres such a hip hop, grime and the normal rap.I will write on how the old artists have changed the type of music into the way it has evolved. I will also write about the subcultures of rap such as the fashion behind the music, graffiti etc... The street culture of music has also released a new vibe behind the music making rap music as a outlet for people who have ‘no way out’. I also want my magazine double page spread to talk about what the future of rap music looks like and to argue the points for the frequently used statement ‘rap is dead ‘
