Elements of Culture Values, Customs, Traditions Languages and Ethnicity Beliefs and Religion Institutions (Economic, Political, Education) Art, Literature and Music, Food, Shelter, Clothing and Technology

3 Cultural Landscape The composite of human imprints on the earth’s surface. Culture Hearth The source area of ideas, innovations, and ideologies that change the world beyond.

5 Ethnicity Common racial, national, tribal, religious, linguistic, or cultural origin or background Ethnic Group A specific group that shares a common language, customs, and heritage Ethnocentrism The belief that ones own group is the best

6 Language Verbal, written, or visual way for people in a group to communicate. Dialect Changes in speech patterns related to class, region, or cultural changes Language Families Groups of languages that share a common origin language 语言 sprache lingua 언어 γλώσσα язык língua lengua 言語

7 Cultural Region The spreading of a culture element Culture Diffusion A region where certain cultural traits prevail. Acculturation Social change due to accepting or adopting an innovation. Innovation Creating something new to meet a need.

8 Region – Formal Region – An area with a common characteristic or feature, and distinct boundaries Functional Region – An area that is connected by a common function or activity. Perceptual Region – An area with no formal boundaries but is understood to exist. An area with one or more characteristics in common.
