17. VENICE  Grew rich from sea trade.  One of Italy’s main port cities.  It is still known for it’s canals and glassware.  An island city of the Mediterranean.

18. FLORENCE  Banking and trade center. Bankers made $$$ by charging interest.  Wealthy leaders paid to beautify the city with impressive buildings and art.  Inland city in the center of Italy.

19. SEPARATE STATES AND RIVAL RULERS  Please look at the map on page 301 of the text.  Italy was not a single country, it was made up of independent states (not united).  In most big cities, a single rich merchant family controlled the government. This type of government was called a signoria.

20. MEDICI FAMILY  Wealthy, powerful banking family.  Cosimo de’ Medici was the ruler of Florence.  Beautified Florence.  Valued education  Florence became the center of Italian art, literature and culture.
