3 The Renaissance began in Italy for 3 reasons: 1. Italy was the center of the Roman Empire. The Italians thought it was convenient to have the ruins and the art surround them to remember their past. 2. In the 1300’s, the cities in Italy had become very wealthy so they could pay painters, sculptors, architects, and other artists to make new works of art. 3. The last reason is that the region was still divided into many small city- states. The most important cities of the Renaissance are Florence, Venice, Genoa, Milan, and Rome. These city-states helped begin and develop the Renaissance. Answer: Click on the answer button to get the answer.

5 The city-states got all of their wealth through trade. Trade was very easy for the Italians due to the fact that their geography was a peninsula in a prime location on the Mediterranean Sea. The city-states had perfect coastlines for ports that merchant ships could dock. Since they were very close to many different places like Spain and France, they could trade for a variety of stuff and then sell it again for a higher price and people accepted the price because it was not native to their area. The rise of the Mongol Empire also helped increase trade because they united almost all of Asia turning it into a vast trade network.

Another thing that helped the Renaissance come about is the competition between the Italian city-states which helped spread the Renaissance idea. In this competition, wealthy nobles and merchants hired artists to produce works of art for their city to increase its fame. When the city-states got more famous, more people wanted to live there. The large number of people led to discussion and sharing of ideas about art. Since Greece had produced many great works of art and literature, the society in Italy wanted to do the same.
