I’m Agent T and I work for the CIA Today, you will get 4 missions to find out what measures the US used to combat communism You and your partner are now CIA agents Your task is to gather quick but accurate information about a CIA agent who has been trapped behind enemy lines

7 MISSION 1 With your partner, read and take notes on events during the Cold War in Europe As CIA officials, your job is to discover ‘dead drop’ to retrieve your handout To receive your clue Find the dead drop zone Have one partner go to retrieve the document Make sure you go to a few ‘false’ locations as you go to confuse onlookers

8 GERMANY Berlin was divided into 4 March 1948 – US, Br and Fr agreed to unify their zones to have a democratic-capitalist West Germany June 24 – Berlin Blockade angered, the Soviets halted all land travel to Berlin Until May 12, ’49, the West carried 2.5 million tons of supplies by plane Showed the West commitment to containing communism The countries of West (May ‘49) and East (Oct ‘49) Germany were established and Berlin remained divided

9 CZECHOSLOVAKIA The Czechs had a democratically elected government dominated by communists but also included noncommunist party Feb ‘48 – Stalin places troops along the Czech border demanding only communists in the government Soviet troops seize control in a coup d’etat (sudden seizure of gov’t by military force) Communists arrested, tried and jailed all those that opposed them, ending free speech and forced farmers to give up land

10 NATO VS. WARSAW PACT 1949 – NATO is formed led by the US and 11 others Pledge that an attack on one is an attack on all of them (collective security) 1955 – Warsaw Pact is formed Led by the Soviets and its satellite states
