Duke of Normandy (region in the north of France that had been conquered by the Vikings) Invaded England with a Norman (North men) army Defeated Harold Godwinson at the Battle of Hastings. – Harold was killed by an arrow to the eye (ouch!!) William declared all of England his property and kept 1/5 for himself English lords in support of Harold lost their land and William granted that land to about 200 Norman lords

Magna Carta: Document drawn up by English nobles and approved by King John, guaranteed certain basic political rights Nobles wanted to safeguard their feudal rights and limit the king’s power It would later be argued that certain clauses applied to all citizens including – No taxation without representation – A jury trial – The protection of the law In general it limited power of the King and guaranteed basic political and legal rights to all
