Please take out “Growing Up Asian in America” as well as both of your portfolio assignments.
On a sheet of paper please set up a proper MLA heading (look in my syllabus). Center title: “Growing Up Asian in America” Formal Response

2. Writing and Form
Looking into Noda’s essay, find a passage or aspect of the writing that you particularly enjoyed, thought held power, etc…..
Be prepared to explain your reasoning. What about the writing worked?
What did you notice about overall form of the writing?
…and how did you apply it to your own Portfolio #2

3. Portfolio #2
Consider: Ethnic background, place of origin, linguistic heritage (the way you speak) place of residence, your gender, age, occupation.
How do these aspects of yourself fit together?
How do they build upon each other as Noda’s elements of identity seemed to do?
Consider her form: brief intro, use of sub-headings, and a concluding/strong last sentence.

4. When Answering Questions…
Refer to author with either full name (Kesaya Noda) or by last name (Noda)- never just a first name!
Answer all parts of the question
Always use textual evidence to support claims. Each answer should include an example and citations:
Noda remembers her identity as being omnipresent as it “seemed to hurtle toward me and paste itself right in my face” (243).
Note how quotes are integrated and citation included.

5. Formal Writing Reminders
For this assignment there should be three CLEAR paragraphs
Introduction: Opening statement, introduction of author and title of essay, thesis statement (last sentence).
Body: Topic sentence- 2-3 examples from text plus follow up commentary after each example.
Conclusion- 2-3 sentences restating thesis and ending answer.

How does Noda use storytelling and song as part of her essay? What do her stories reveal about her?
How does Noda use stereotypes in her essay? Find 2-3 examples and explain how they add complexity to her essay
How does Noda use metaphor in her essay? Find 2-3 examples and explain how they add complexity to her essay
How does Noda use hatred and racism in her essay? How does she grapple with these external realities in her own identity?
How is Noda’s relationship (self/identity) shown to develop through her essay? Ultimately, what does it help her define?
