1 “Rogue Wave” Summative Assessment Notes for Remediation & Review

2 Problem #1: Making your response like a planning
Possible Reasons: Confused on the difference in structure Not paying attention to requirements Rushing

3 What is expected… BOTH a complete planning and a complete response are expected on exams. This is true for both short responses and essays. While we don’t want you to spend excessive amounts of time planning, you need to organize your thoughts before you begin writing.

4 Planning Vs. Response Planning Response Includes a quick thesis
Includes direct quotes from the text with citations (numbered) Does not have complete sentences other than the quote Takes about 5 minutes Includes a full thesis Includes explanations, development of ideas, and direct quotes from the text with citations Quotes never touch 5-7 sentences in length Has a sense of beginning, middle, and end One solid paragraph

5 Planning Example Scoot’s character = Determined
“There has to be some way to get out” (Taylor 9). “She knew she’d survive” (Taylor 9).

6 Response Example In the short story “Rogue Wave” by Theodore Taylor, the author reveals the determined quality of Scoot’s character through her thoughts and actions while in the cabin. Even though she is trapped in a cabin and close to drowning, Scoot does not give up hope of her survival. For example, she thinks, “There has to be some way to get out” (Taylor 9). Her persistence despite the terrifying circumstance demonstrates her determination. Also, this is exemplified in the quote, “She knew she’d survive” (Taylor 9). She refuses to believe that she will die in the icy tomb of the overturned ship. Scoot is a determined character that simply refuses to let circumstances define her and chooses to live.

7 Problem #2: No clear thesis statement
Possible reasons: Rushing Not using your notes while writing Unclear of the expectations of the short response Not checking your work

8 What is expected… There should be a clear, thoughtful thesis statement that includes all required thesis elements.

9 The Expectation…. A thesis statement includes: The author of the work
The title of the work The type of writing A restatement of the question An answer to the question Only one sentence Does not include any support (textual evidence)

10 What is wrong with these thesis statements?
Scoot could be described as determined according to the author’s description. -Author? Title? Type of writing? 2. In “Rogue Wave,” Scoot is determined. -Author? Type of writing? Restate the question? 3. In Theodore Taylor’s short story he describes Scoot as brave as revealed through her thoughts and actions. “Rogue Wave” shows Scoot to be a determined character that remains brave throughout. -One sentence?

11 Example Thesis In the short story “Rogue Wave” by Theodore Taylor, the author reveals the determined quality of Scoot’s character through her thoughts and actions while in the cabin.

12 Problem # 3: Integrating Quotes Improperly
Possible reasons: Not re-reading your work Not planning Not using your notes while writing to check for requirements Unclear expectations for responses

13 The Expectation… Responses should include quotes that relate to the prompt The quotes should support your thesis 50/50 rule (Quotes should not be the majority of your response) Quotes should never touch Your explanation needs to explain your quote selection and it needs to prove your thesis Do not end with a quote

14 1. More than ½ of the response is explanation

18 Extra Tips/ Remaining Issues
Capitalize all names ( Theodore Taylor not theodore taylor, Scoot not scoot) Develop your ideas! Don’t settle for the bare minimum if you want full points. The bare minimum is 70%. Remember to not use any personal pronouns (No I, me, we, you a.k.a. “I think…”)
