SLOVAK FAVOURITE MEALS ACCORDING TO SEASONS SPRING
SHEEP CHEESE „HALUSKY“ It´s the most famous traditional Slovak meal made of special Slovak product - sheep cheese. Small dumlings are boiled, then mixed with cheese. It´s served with fried bacon, sour milk and chopped chive.
SPRING VEGETABLE SOUP It´s very healthy soup and full of vitamines after winter fat meals. We use vegetables from our garden – carrots, peas, parsley, celery, spring onion.
DOUGNUTS This is a Slovak flour meal. It ´s traditionally prepared before Ash Wednesday. It is made of dough. We cut the circles and fill them with jam. They are fried in oil are sprinkled with sugar.
CHICKEN SOUP – BROTH It´s a clear soup of chicken bones and meat, root vegetables- carrots, parsley, onion and kohlrabi. It´s served with cooked, thin (home- made) noodles. We usually eat it on Sundays and on some holidays.

GOULASH Although it´s typical Hungarian meal, it´s very popular in Slovakia. This thick dish is prepared of lots of onions, beef, carrots, potatoes, tomatoes, pepper and red paprika. It´s favourite meal of garden parties in summer, cooked in the garden over an open fire. It´s served with bread.
PANCAKES WITH STRAWBERRIES Thin pancakes are filled with strawberries, then folded or rolled and then decorated with dark chocolate, cream and extra strawberries. It´s very fresh meal.
v VEGETABLE SALAD WITH CHEESE It´s very light summer meal of fresh vegetables from our gardens – cucumber, peppers, lettuce and tomatoes. It´s finished with grated cheese. This summer salad can be served for lunch or super side dish.
v CHERRY CAKE It´s very simple to make it. We need eggs, sugar, milk, butter, flour and fresh cherries or we can try other berries. It´s delicious light coffee cake.

GARLIC SOUP It´s very common to start lunch with soup. There are two kinds of this soup – creamy or clear. It´s hot soup with pressed garlic, cheese and croutons. This soup is usually eaten in mountain regions. It´s very easy and healthy.
POTATO PANCAKES WITH SAUERKRAUT Pancakes are made of peeled and grated potatoes, egg, flour, grated onion and garlic. They are fried in oil and topped with sauerkraut – sour cabbage. They are very popular and delicious.
APPLE CAKE It´s mostly made of fresh apples in autumn. To prepare it we need grated apples, butter, flour, sugar, cinnamon and eggs. It consists of apple filling between two layers of dough. It is sweet and delicious. Unfortunately, it won´t last till the next day
SLOVAK SHEEP CHEESE DUMPLINGS They are boiled dumplings or „pirohy“ with sheep cheese and mashed potato filling. It´s salty meal served with fried bacon,cream and sour milk.

KAPUSTNICA – SAUERKRAUT SOUP It´s traditional Slovak soup eaten on Christmas Eve made of sauerkraut, mushrooms, smoked ham, sausages, and various spices. It´s often served with bread and sour cream.
GINGERBREADS They are typical Christmas cakes. To prepare them we need: honey, sugar, flour and eggs. They are in different shapes and decorated with white – coloured icing.
FRIED FISH AND POTATO SALAD It´s typical course on Christmas dinner. It can be fresh carp or frozen fish. Potato salad is prepared with carrot, peas, gherkins, onion and mayonnaise. After dinner it´s time to open our Christmas presents.
LENTIL SOUP It´s very popular soup rich of fibre. It´s prepared of lentils, potatoes, carrots, bay leaves, black peppercorn. It´s flavored with pressed garlic, lemon juice and sour cream.
